Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos 3 Likely to Headline UFC 166 in Houston

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Junior dos Santos vs Cain Velasquez UFC 155The UFC is headed back to Houston in October for an event that will likely be headlined by a rubber match between UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos.

UFC president Dana White relayed the return to Houston and likely headliner at Thursday’s UFC 161 media scrum in Winnipeg.

The return to Houston, at least for the time being, rules out longstanding rumors of an event at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.

White shot down any talk of Cowboys Stadium, adding that the Houston event would be in an arena. The UFC has made two trips to Houston in the past, both of which took place at the Toyota Center.

The October event would likely be dubbed UFC 166 and return to the Toyota Center.

Velasquez vs. dos Santos 3 came to fruition after each man won his respective fight at UFC 160 in May.

Velasquez successfully defended his belt against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, which was his second victory over the big Brazilian. In the night’s co-main event, dos Santos knocked out Mark Hunt to earn a return shot at regaining the belt he once held.

Ugh…don’t want this fight. Rather see Cain vs Werdum.

    • bajafox

This fight was going to happen sometime anyway, might as well get it out of the way

    • #1mmafan.

Because your hero Cain WILL lose!!!

      • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

Anyone else you think is capable of beating Cain other then JDS? I honestly can’t think of anyone. There are tough fights for him but nobody I think has a better chance then JDS to beat Cain other then Overeem. And let’s not bring up a loss to Bigfoot as the only reason he can’t beat Cain.

        • Baller31

Overeem’s loss to Bigfoot was entirely because of ego…he toyed with him for a couple of rounds when he should have just put him away in the first.

          • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

            Very true.

      • zzl

You would think JDS fans would be humbled by now, but no. You still think JDS will flash ko Cain again?

        • Baller31

Humbled by what? 1 loss in the UFC, by decision? Cain got ko’d in one minute…and he has almost been knocked out a few times in his career.. definitely not a great chin for a heavyweight. I don’t think either fighter has a clear advantage in this matchup, which is what makes it a great match.

          • zzl

humbled by the fact that JDS got taken to school last fight with Cain. JDS fans kept saying he was going to walk through cain with ease again in their 2nd fight. Now they’re acting like that again.

          • Baller31

I don’t think any fan of either fighter should be too cocky going into this fight. Obviously, both fighters have the ability to win. What i’ve seen are too many Cain fans just looking at the last fight and thinking this one will be a repeat…not going to happen.

    • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

I am a Werdum fan but JDS deserves this fight more. His only loss is to Cain. Same goes for Cain. And they both won their fights after losing to one another. Werdum should fight Daniel Cormier just to get his name out of the picture because then there is nobody else.

      • Collideoverme

I do agree, Werdum vs Cormier should be next.

        • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

In general as a fan I would like to see Werdum vs Mir at some point depending on how he does with Barnett.

  • zztoppppp

Would prefer Cain fight Werdum, Nelson or Cormier but its going to be in Houston so I get to go to a live event so I’m excited!!!

    • Tiddy28

I imagine that the winner of JDS/Cain III will then likely have to fight one of the three guys you just mentioned, and then the two left out would be next in line.

  • Baller31

Glad it’s finally confirmed because this fight needs to happen to determine the best heavyweight mma fighter in the world. There are some other good heavyweights, but these two are just a cut above all the rest.

  • Cptmats

    Nighty night Cain !

  • Edgar ontano

Jds is great dont get get me wrong but he doesnt deserve this shot

    • Baller31

How does he not? Cain got a rematch after one win, why would JDS not deserve the same?

      • Werdoomb

Edgar obviously doesn’t understand what the word “deserve” means.

I think he is saying that a win over Mark Hunt should get one a title shot. Well…a win of Mark Hunt + being a former title holder + no other viable alternative = deserves title shot.

        Who deserves more than JDS?

        • Edgar ontano

Wedrum, and mark hunt? he’s ranked 9th and he beats struve? Who hasnt beat struve? lol. All i’m saying is that wedrum is more deserving then JDS

          • Cptmats

            Not even close !

      • Edgar ontano

Because at the time when cain won there were no contenders. overeem was on steroids, there was no one else. now theres wedrum, cormier, Big Counrty. He doesnt deserve it

        • Baller31

Well, let’s see….JDS has beat Werdum and Big Country…and Cormier flat out refuses to fight Cain…plus after Cormier’s nap inducing performance against Mir, he doesn’t deserve a title shot yet anyhow. So yeah, JDS obviously deserves it.

          • Edgar ontano

You know what, your right. i wanna see this fight. when its all said and done these 2 guys will be fighting 5 times

          • Cptmats

Nah, Jds will KO Cain bad and prove that the second fight was a fluke !

          • Edgar ontano

Cain whipped his ass for 25 minutes complete domination that was no fluke!!

          • Cptmats

That’s like bragging about beating up a handicap person !

            IT WAS A FLUKE !

And BTW Cain Did not whip his ass for 25 minutes. Junior was making Cain look stupid before he started gassing !

I can’t believe that people are so stupid as to think that Junior losing the second fight actually had anything to do with Cain !

Cain comes in at 100% and takes 25 minute to win and can’t even finish a JDS that came in at about 20% !
            LOL

          • Edgar ontano

oh man, your talking out of your ass. enough said. Cain put him on his back, rocked him. dos santos has a great chin but you dont have to knock ppl out in order to be a bad ass a good example of that GSP. Cain is a better fighter

          • Cptmats

LOL ! Guess we will see !
Did you see that right JDS land on Hunt in the first round ? Cain would still be snoring !

          • Edgar ontano

i did see that that s*** was nice! But this isnt kick boxing theres more to standup in mma . and has a mixed martial artist cain is better than JDS

          • Cptmats

Sry Dude JDS even has better wrestling not to mention everything else !

  • eric

wont be any different from the second cain will push pace, take jds to floor, and possibly even stoppage ground and pound elbows whatever the case may be’ cain will reign victorious and go on to fight werdum and dominate him and become the solid p4p heavyweight king

    • Baller31

Or maybe it won’t be any different from the first, where JDS ko’d Cain in a minute

      • Cptmats

        I think that’s alot more likely !
Two things I know for sure.
#1 before junior started to gas in the last fight, Cain attempted Nine take downs in the first three and a half minutes. First one ended with Cain on his back then Junior stuffed the next eight in a row. Cain could not take a healthy Junior down if his life depended on it !
#2 Cain will not KO Junior ! Even in as bad of shape as Junior was in he still took Cains best shots for five rounds.
I can’t understand how anyone thinks the last fight means anything ? Everyone knows Junior should have been in a Hospital not fighting !

        • zzl

Keep making excuses for JDS. JDS is terrible when it comes to defense. He’s only good when he’s the bully, but can’t handle when he’s being bullied.

          • Cptmats

And keep making excuses for Cain. He’s terrible when his opponent isn’t half dead ! LOL

      • zzl

They were both injured that fight, who cares what happend. Even if Cain won the first fight, it still wouldn’t of counted.

        • Baller31

I have no idea what you’re saying…but in the first fight Cain didn’t last long enough for existing injuries to have played any part in him getting ktfo!

  • tyrone

Dana is in the business of protecting cain, and he knows big country has got cains number. Thats why you will not see big country vs cain

  • james velasquez

Im gonna be honest. Im a BIG – HUUUGE fan of VELASQUEZ. He is my FAVORITE FIGHTER and ATHLETE in general.
Without a doubt in my mind HE IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD.
As for me, JDS DESERVES this fight.
Lets face it, HW division doesnt have many fighters that can deal with CAIN, but JDS is one of those who can the most. Other than him, Oveerem. IMO
All those people who thinks JDS doesnt deserve this shot is just scared that he can take this from Cain. Im affraid, i admit. But i wont say JDS doesnt deserve the shot, cause he does.
So i hope CAIN can repeat amazing performance from his last fight and win again.

  • BobLemons

The only reason I don’t want this fight yet is that the loser will be resigned to the fate of a gatekeeper for as long as the winner holds the belt.

    • Cptmats

Not necessarily ! although I think JDS will beat Cain 9 out of 10 times I can also see JDS getting caught in a sub by Werdume (unlikely but possible) And we’ve all seen how great wrestling can trump Great BJJ when GSP did it to Penn and Shields so whats to say Cain couldn’t do it to Werdume by controlling him on the ground or making it into a boxing match.
      Styles make fights !

  • Cptmats

Junior will KO Cain no problem !

  • Brown pride

JDS got lucky the first time because Caín wasn’t at a hundred % he totally destroyed JDS he got the worst beating of his career And probably his Life, And he will get a beating again. Can’t wait to see him shut JDS fans for good! Caín is the true champion!
