The UFC’s first trip to Mexico just took a heavy hit.

Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez injured his knee during training and has been forced to withdraw from his title defense against Fabricio Werdum at UFC 180, officials announced on Tuesday.

In Velasquez’s place will be Mark Hunt, who will now face Werdum at the Nov. 15 main event in Mexico City for the interim heavyweight title.

“I’m so unbelievably disappointed that this happened,” Velasquez said in a statement released by the UFC. “To say I was looking forward to fighting in Mexico for the first time is an understatement. I wanted to fight on that card so bad. Looks like it wasn’t meant to be and it’s not going to happen. I’m going to get my [right] knee fixed and get back to training as soon as I can. I’m sorry to the fans in Mexico who were expecting this fight, and I hope to be able to come down and still be a part of this historic event.”

Details on how Velasquez injured his knee were not revealed.

Hunt was quick to jump at the opportunity to face Werdum as Velasquez heads to the sideline. According to the New Zealander, he’s hopping on a plane to Mexico tomorrow so he can prepare for the five-round main event.

“I feel blessed to have this opportunity to fight for another world title,” Hunt said in a statement. “This is something that doesn’t happen often to people. First K1 and now UFC – how can I say no, even though it’s on short notice? I’m dropping everything and flying to Mexico tomorrow so I can best prepare myself for this fight. I have to get into shape and acclimatize to that environment, which is really important.”

Velasquez is no stranger to injury, having hurt his shoulder in a trilogy fight with Junior dos Santos in October 2013. The heavyweight champ has been inactive since, and the Werdum bout was meant to be his long-awaited return from injury.

Werdum, through a statement to the UFC, said he’ll be prepared for whatever stands in front of him at the November pay-per-view.

“I’m ready for whatever comes,” he said. “I have been training in Mexico for nearly two months and accept the challenge that is presented to me. I’ll continue to prepare and will arrive ready to fight on behalf of all my Latin American fans.”

yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss! Mark Hunt UFC Champ FTW! It’s going to happen…. prepare yourself.

  • william

wow how amazing would that be to see hunt win the title after everything hes done. i worry about his prep time though. he definatley has a pretty decent chance though with the style matchup.

    • Happenstance

If he makes it thru Werdum then Cain is gonna slaughter him with his cardio.

      • Happenstances mom

Doesn’t matter. Mark Hunt is 40 years old. He is the people’s champ. It would be a beautiful ending to his illustrious career, win or lose.

      • TheMod

Cardio doesn’t matter if you can’t even get into the Octagon. It’s be like Clay Guida as a Master Chess player instead of a fighter.

        • Happenstance

Yeah but when fight night comes, Cain will bring his A game and demolish Hunt, just like he destroyed the other big guys (Bigfoot, Lesnar, Rothwell) who couldn’t keep up with him. Mark will be lucky if he last two rounds with Velasquez.

  • ultimatefatcunt

This is not the first time whereby the main headliner is out. Considering that it is the main headliners who get the local fans to buy tickets and ppv but if that did not materialise you cant get a refund. This is a cheat! You can guarantee it would never be a sellout or feature in cinemas if cain wont on the card. Im sorry for the cinema promotor becos they dont sell advance tickets, so now no way they would get more than 10 ppl watching inside the cinema. There needs to be a law stopping company ripping ppl off when the actual event does not materialise as advertised.

    • 426HEMI

You do realize that if the MAIN EVENT is changed you CAN get a REFUND on UFC tickets? Only time there is no refund if it’s any of the other fights on the card (which makes sense as there are always some injuries or changes). Just like in California with the Renan vs TJ fight ticket holders could get a refund when RB pulled out the day before. So really your statement is entirely misleading and uninformed,

      • ultimaterippoff

Are you seriously saying the event would still be a sellout and that it would be shown in cinemas? Furthermore, where is it clear where a refund is possible where no formal statements have been made, especially in Spanish as it is held in Mexico. Sure, you may get a refund but most ppl wouldnt know or how and if it is indeed a refund, is it full refund. This MUST be clear for the buying public in the country the event is held.

        • ultimate’smom

Ummm…people who are wealthy enough to buy tickets in Mexico (yes, in Spanish) are probably smart enough to know the concept of a refund and will ask around if they choose to do so.

It’s funny seeing an uneducated American questioning the IQ level of speakers of another language.

        • Shocked_n_Awed

“Are you seriously saying the event would still be a sellout and that it would be shown in cinemas?”

No… nope, he didn’t say that at all… He just stated the fact that you were wrong in your first post to assert people “cant [sic] get a refund.”

  • TheCerealKiller

This is a garbage title fight. No reason for an interim title. They should refund tickets if people want.

    • PrideMMA

I agree on the refund if people want that but to say this is garbage is wrong. These guys are world class fighters! I know you have strong opinions on things but come on dude. Hunt and Werdum are warriors! If I lived in Mexico though and paid for a ticket to watch Velasquez fight I would definitely be upset and a refund should be mandatory if requested.

      • TheCerealKiller

As a random non title fight it’s fine, but a title is a joke. Hunt is on a one fight win streak over Nelson, he’s fat and out of shape and is 40 years old. On the other hand, looking at the HW division is a sad event.

        • RubeKegal

Agreed, it is a garbage title fight. They might as well have thrown Arlovski into this fight. At least he’s on a 2 fight win streak! ha

        • Guest

Ever occurred to you that the interim champion can make a few defences of it’s own until the real world champion can get back to their feet and unify them both?

          • SerialMom

            Cereal is a bitter fool.

            That’s about it.

            He is very opinionated.

        • Hugh Shakeshaft

HW division has a shallow bench.

          • hugh’s mom

Yeah…by shallow you mean having least number of wellrounded guys I agree.

The beauty of HW division is something quite different buddy.

The other divisions are really divisions made up for little guys because we felt bad for them. If we were still on the OW system, no one would know about Mighty Mouse and Jose Aldo.

          • Hugh Shakeshaft

No doubt the HW division will always be a fight to determine the baddest man on the planet, which is currently Cain.

        • SerialKillerMommy

A fat and out of shape 40 year old dude that proved your predictions to be wrong multiple times buddy.

You are such a bitter fool.

I see you posting here all the time. Do you enjoy your minimum wage job?

    • shakejunt

cain hurt his knee, no telling how long he’ll realistically be out. only other options were arlovski or to pull jds/miocic. hunt probably deserves it more than andrei right now and it’s hard to take jds away from stipe again.

they do refunds for main event changes.

  • Jim Mace

Bad matchup for Hunt. But I will be cheering for him!

  • mmapressure

Very very bad matchup for Hunt. He will always have the advantage in standup but werdum is extremely good on the ground, way way better than roy nelsons ground game. Still rooting for Hunt though but this is one matchup I didnt want to see because I love both fighters.

    • Guest

Werdum is gonna f**k Hunt up when they hit the floor.

  • PrideMMA

I was really hoping to see Werdum fight Velasquez because I believe that Werdum is the worst match up for Velasquez stylistically. I think Werdum would of won and should of retired after. Werdum is a legend!! Not taking anything away from Velasquez I think he’s the best heavyweight in the world. I just think Werdum was and is a bad matchup for him. Hunt has a punchers chance in this fight, however I think he will lose. I like Hunt and I think he’s a great fighter. Both Hunt and Werdum have gone through ups and downs and where they are now is Incredible. They both have an interim title shot and then a match at Velasquez. All these guys are badasses!!!

    • deepgrim

werdum could be a tricky match up for cain but the same could be said cain for werdum. i think cains wrestling could keep the fight standing, and his boxing and cardio would probably have been too much for werdum, although i liked what i saw of werdum standing against brown. This will probably only delay the cain werdum fight, as much as i would like to see hunt win werdum has more ways to win the fight. Think they avoided JDS for the replacement incase he beat werdum and were left with cain jds 4

  • Nate “THE CHEAT” Marquardt

Cain should be stripped of his title. I mean let’s be honest here he fights less than Pettis

    • Happenstance

Cain has made two title defences since regaining the title. How many times has Pettis defended the title? ZILCHO!

      • uncle

Pettis is more impressive, plus Cain had his belt longer then Pettis.
with only 2 title defences in 2 years that is not saying much.

        • Guest

It’s saying more than the amount of time Pettis has held the belt (1 year) without a single defence. Pettis was more impressive in WEC.

          • uncle

OK look at it like this who had the tougher road to be
champion? LW’s are insane the HW division is a joke
So Pettis beat more skillful fighters then Cain. Without a
single title defense .This year is not over pretty tony is
            going to KO Melendez.

  • Jon Doe

Werdum submission Keylock/Kimura/Armbar rd1. easy. He’s been matched up with strikers/hitters as of late but dont forget this is a guy who lost 6 straight fights, 5 by some type of arm submission now he’s going against a Submission specialist. Why?

    • Guest

Why? Coz Werdum has earned the right to challenge for the title that’s why.

      • Jon Doe

        Mark Hunt dummy

        • Jon Doe’s Mom

because he’s been doing really well for some time now.

Wouldn’t sleep on Mark Hunt on this buddy. I agree that Werdum is the favorite simply because he is more well rounded, younger and has also looked great as of late.

But I would NOT sleep on Mark Hunt. He did as well or better against Big Foot and Roy Nelson than Werdum.

Werdum has been knocked out cold before by JDS.

          • Guest

Bigfoot is a slow heavyweight so it was easy for Mark to keep up with him. Nelson kinda the same deal except he’s fat & prefers to throw punches.

JDS did KO Werdum but that was 6 years ago & Werdum had since improved by leaps & bounds with his striking.

    • deepgrim

mark hunt seems to have tighted up his submission defence and takedown defense, but by just how much remains to be seen. werdum could possibly edge a battle on the feet too, but there is also a chance that mark hunt will put your lights out. he looked to be in better shape against roy than he has been in a while.

  • uncle

Cain is injury prone to only defend the belt a total of times whithin 2 years
    is a problem.

    • uncle

      a total of 2

  • snapdad

cain has always been one of my favorite fighters, but its irritating when he only fights like once a year. as much as I cant stand rousey, at least she is in there fighting every 3 months.

    • Guest

The heavyweight division is much more higher level of fighters while the women’s division is still in its infant stages. Rousey has had no competition since she fought in the UFC.

      • Darin

Cain isn’t getting injured from the competition, he’s getting injured in training. I doubt his training is any more intense than what Demetrious Johnson does.

        • ac

I think it’s easier for heavyweights to get injured. Your joints and ligaments don’t get proportionately stronger as you get bigger.

        • Kris-tyahn

Darin: It’s common sense that the heavier you are, the more pressure and wear & tear there is on your joints/body. Training while 240-265lbs is a lot harder to train than someone who weighs 135-170lbs. The lighter you are, the easier it is for you to train like crazy, which means a lower chance of getting injured!

  • Beaners are Funny

    Cain is a coward beaner.

    • uncle

      I don’t know how a coward becomes a champion

      • ac

Cowards can become champions. They just have to be far superior to everyone they face. Having said that, I don’t think Cain is a coward.

      • Scooby

I bet you like beaner penis.

  • Hugh Shakeshaft

Brutal year for UFC injuries. Dana must be pulling his hair out!

    • Guest

      2012 was worse!

  • Hugh Shakeshaft

    Douchebag! Get a real job!

  • Guest

OMG! CerealKiller said that he can beat Mark Hunt in a real fight because Mark is a fat out of shape 40 years old man.

    Do you agree?

    • Cereal’s Mom

Like I said below, he is a delusional, highly opinionated, bitter, foolish MMA nerd.

Mark Hunt would slaughter his whole family.

      • TheCerealKiller

Same guy posting under 4 different names talking to himself…

        • Cereal Fanny

          U so smart Sisi.

      • Darin

If you’re going to pose as multiple people, don’t post all your comments at the same time.

    • Beaners are Funny

CerealKiller is a coward beaner. Hunt would rape him in a fight.

Cereal Killah is a fool. All he does is talk.

  • shakejunt

the internet must be so happy

  • macarrech

Fvck interim title. Make this the title fight, and let Cain fight the loser for a title shot.

    • Guest

Cain fight the loser? That makes no sense. The winner will unify their belt with cain’s while he’s active again but for now at least the interim champion can make a title defence while the current champion heals up.

  • Cain ain’t able again

Oh no candy Cain hurt again. I agree with the guy that said it should be for the tittle. If u can’t fight in a yr u have no biz holding a tittle

  • TheMod

Werdum was a little too cocky with Travis Browne. I think he’s going to look down on Mark Hunt and increase his chance of being KO’d.

  • Shocked_n_Awed

Man, this sucks… feels like every big fight this year has gotten screwed by an injury.

By the way, anyone know where Overeem was today?? 🙂

  • drkdisciple

Meaningless interim title. JDS beat both those guys and Cain could probably beat both of them the same night!

  • Darin

Big respect for Hunt, dude is awesome. The UFC needs to put a one year expiration on its titles. If you can’t fight once in a whole year you shouldn’t be calling yourself champ.

I guess La Razists will have to find a new poster boy.

  • solo

I hate this interim made up fight for the belt cr**. It doesnt make the fight more interesting at all, and im sorry for both guys but whoever wins is not a Champion and shoudnt considered himself a one.
Who knows Mark can even make weight, he is probably alot over 265.
And now i heard that Joe Lauzon is out for the Diego Sanchez fight. God damn!

    • TheCerealKiller

Hunt is 37lbs over right now. He just fought! How do you put on that much weight in one month?

      • Lucas Freire

37lbs doesn’t seems much to someone who CUTS into 260, right? lol

        • TheCerealKiller

Fat isn’t water cutting. You can’t sweat out 37lbs of fat.

          • Lucas Freire

Of course not, but given he’s a FAT 290pounder, is it really that hard to believe he dehydrates that much weight?

          • TheCerealKiller

He started the Nelson camp at 340lbs…

          • Lucas Freire

All the more a reason I can’t understand why you think 37lbs are that much for a guy who is 340…most MW/LHW gain 20 pounds just by dehydrating,Anderson at least got 185 to the weigh in and usually fought with 195-205, it doesn’t seem surprising to me that a heavy HW got so much weight in a month.

      • solo

Jeeez! Already that much. What did he eat? His baby?!

  • Hugh Shakeshaft

Dana should give Fedor a call.
