Things went from bad to worse very quickly for Nate Marquardt on Saturday.
Marquardt was not medically cleared to fight in the main event of UFC on Versus 4, and then, a short time later, he found himself out of a job.
“It’s true. He failed his medicals. Not only is out of this fight and out of the main event on Versus, he will no longer be with the UFC,” stated UFC president Dana White in a short video post on Tout.com, shortly after the UFC on Versus 4 weigh-ins.
When it first came to light that Marquardt was out of Sunday’s main event, Kelly Crigger, a representative of Marquardt’s management company, Alchemist Mixed Martial Arts, said, “He was not medically cleared. It is nothing serious.”
UFC officials at the weigh-in stated only that Marquardt didn’t pass his physical. Whatever the reason for that was, White apparently found it much more serious than what initial reports indicated.
He wasted no time posting the video statement on Tout.com announcing Marquardt’s firing. He fell short of clarifying exactly why the former middleweight contender had been fired, other than to say that he failed his medicals in Pennsylvania.
MMAWeekly.com has made several attempts to follow-up with the Marquardt camp, but was unable to reach anyone for comment at the time of publication.
