Matt Hughes Calls on the Opposition to Train for Serra
Matt Hughes and Matt Serra are fighting at UFC 98 next week, and Hughes appears to be taking the fight very seriously.
It's been basically a year since either has fought, and both are coming off of losses. Hughes enters the bout off of a devastating flying knee from Thiago Alves, which followed his second loss to Georges St. Pierre. Serra faces Hughes after losing his rematch with St. Pierre at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
As the time for UFC 98 draws near, Hughes has branched out of the confines of his H.I.T. Squad gym. In a post on his official blog, he indicated that not only has he sought out a familiar face in former teammate Jeremy Horn, but he also traveled to Minnesota to train with former opponent Sean Sherk.
Last week, Matt Pena and I went up and trained with Sean Sherk and several other fighters at Greg Nelson's Minnesota Martial Arts Academy. We were there from Monday through Saturday afternoon. I had a great training session and also a good time. One thing about that gym is that they've got some tough guys in there. No wonder Sean has done as good as he has. The week before that, I was in Salt Lake City training with Jeremy Horn.
Hughes and Sherk fought at UFC 42 several years ago. Sherk lost his bid to take the UFC welterweight title away from Hughes, but took him the duration of their five-round championship bout.Labels: Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, Sean Sherk, UFC 98

Hughes and Serra: A Sitcom That Will Never Happen
Even if Matt Hughes and Matt Serra lived next to each other in a parallel dimension, they wouldn't have potlucks together.
On a Tuesday teleconference for next weekend's UFC 98, a reporter posed this bizarre scenario: what would happen if Matt Serra and Matt Hughes were next door neighbors in an apartment building?
Whether this fantasy apartment was in Long Island or rural Illinois, neither Serra or Hughes saw any change from their current dislike for each other, even if they didn't share a rocky past.
"I respect him as a fighter, as far as fighting ability," qualified Serra. "Nah, I don't think we'd really hang out. I don't think we'd get along too great. I just can't see us going bowling together. That's just me."
Hughes agreed with Serra's assessment.
"I just think we'd do our own thing," he said. "Matt's exactly right, I don't think we'd hang out. Probably nod our head, say hi in the hallway. We're just two different people."
"I think we should look for a reality show," added Serra.
If they did go bowling--a rematch from their showdown on the sixth season of "TUF," Serra saw another win at the lanes.
"I'm no big bowler, but we saw how that went," he said.
The nine-time welterweight champ was none too amused.
"Who cares who would win in bowling? I don't, and I really don't think Matt does either. Does it really matter who beats each other in bowling? Whoever beats each other in bowling is whoever is luckier that day. I think it's safe to assume we both suck at it."
And probably safe to say the two will never be on camera again together.Labels: Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, UFC 98

Jason Brilz Anticipates October or November Return
Jason Brilz sounded surprised when MMAInsider called to ask if he was on deck as a fill-in for injured UFC fighters.
Light heavyweights have had a rough go in past months, with four high profile fights shuffled due to injury.
Brilz was successful, and more importantly, uninjured, in his last outing at UFC 96 in March. A two month turnaround could be do-able for a slot at UFC 98 or the "TUF 9" Finale in June.
But according to the full-time firefighter, the Octagon is far from his mind.
"I'm not much of one for summertime training," said Brilz, who spoke to MMAInsider from his firehouse near Omaha, Nebraska.
Brilz has oft stated he doesn't want to fight full time... and he really means it.
"I think I'll probably be fighting in October or November," he continued.
UFC 104 has been rumored for Memphis Tennesse, featuring the return of former UFC light heavyweight champ Rampage Jackson, who withdrew from UFC 98 due to jaw injury. UFC 105 has no rumored location, but UFC president Dana White has hinted at more international locations to come for the promotion.Labels: Jason Brilz, UFC 104, UFC 105, UFC 98

Evans and Jackson Altercation At UFC Photo Shoot
While UFC light heavyweight champ Rashad Evans might be focused on challenger Lyoto Machida, by no means has he forgotten about Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
He says the two nearly came to blows at a recent UFC photo shoot.
Some intrepid UFC staffers booked them on the same day, and things got ugly for a spell.
"I looked at him and he walked out of the room," Evans told MMAInsider. "He was like, 'that's messed up putting us together.' They tried to separate us, and the UFC walked him out in the hallway and walked me out in the hallway. And they walked me into the same hallway he was at.
"I looked at him and I was like, what, man? He was like, 'Rashad don't talk to me, man! Don't talk to me! Don't say nothin' to me! You don't know me! You don't know me!' The (expletive) I need to know you for?"
Eventually, cooler heads prevailed, and the photo shoot went on. But Evans filed it in the motivation bank for later.
Following UFC 96, the two went nose-to-nose for forty heated seconds to hype a future showdown.
Later, Jackson bowed out of a quick turnaround meeting with the champ at UFC 98, citing jaw surgery that would make him unavailable.
Many fans wrote the encounter and its aftermath off as hype, part of the business of promoting. Evans maintains it was all real.
"(My camp) was laughing about it, but I was pissed," he said. "I felt mad because I felt like he disrespected Keith a little bit. Keith tried his ass off and he had a good fight, and Rampage didn't look all that good to be acting like he killed him or something. I just didn't like that. Whenever you invest in any of your partners, and when it doesn't turn around the way you want it to turn out, it kind of hurts your feelings a little bit. And that's what happened."
Before 96, he says he got along fine with the former champ, which takes him away from all-out hatred. He's happy to face challenger Lyoto Machida on May 23rd, but looks forward to the day he can squash the recent animosity with Rampage.
"I don't dislike him, but I really want to whup his ass, you know what I'm saying?" Evans said. "I don't know where that falls. I like Quinton. He's a funny guy, and a great person, but I really want to beat his ass. Is that too much of a hypocrisy?"Labels: Quinton Jackson, Rashad Evans, UFC 96, UFC 98

Frank Mir Tells BodyBuilding.com May 23 Date is Off
Will he? Won't he? Well, it appears he won't.
Frank Mir did an interview with Bodybuilding.com at the Arnold Sports Expo on Friday saying that he will not fight Brock Lesnar on May 23. He is hopeful that they can still fight in the summertime, but it now appears the UFC 98 is out of the picture.
Unless of course, Mir changes his mind.Labels: Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir, UFC 98
