Herring to UFC: Don't Worry About It

All is well with Heath "The Texas Crazy Horse" Herring months after he was forced to withdraw from a co-main event bout with Cain Velasquez at UFC 99 in June. So well, in fact, he's not looking at a return to the cage until the New Year.

"I've told the UFC don't even worry about it until next year," he said Friday.

Violently ill with pneumonia symptoms, Herring said he was completely unable to train for Velasquez in the home stretch of his camp and had no choice but to pass up the fight with the American Kickboxing Academy standout.

Herring suffers from asthma and said the illness worsened the condition. Worse yet, he couldn't use his inhaler because its active ingredients would have flagged him for illegal substances per Nevada State Athletic Commission based statutes.

So why is he so relaxed about his time off? Hollywood, babe.

Herring's appearance in the MMA movie "Never Surrender" got the attention of the film's producers, who hired him for an untitled horror movie, which he recently wrapped. He plays a gang leader that gets eaten by monsters.

Herring says he may fly south of the equator to Columbia to play a boxer in an action movie filming in early September.

In the meantime, he's working on a restaurant, The Tilted Kilt, of which he is a partial owner.

Herring says his Texas roots made him a lock for UFC 103, but his other hobbies got in the way. And he's just fine with that.

"I've got to take advantage of this while I can," said Herring.

Will Hendo vs. Franklin II Hold as UFC 103 Main Event?

New Twitter devotee Rich Franklin relayed a curious thing Saturday morning: his re-match with Dan Henderson had been taken off the event description for UFC 103 on Sept. 19 in Dallas.

"Ive heard the ufc pulled my fight off the website for 103," tweeted Franklin. "I don't kno y. They hvnt spoken to me @ this, n i assume the fight is still on."

Grammar issues aside, the message seemed to be a red flag--the UFC was backing away from the match-up, which had drawn almost unanimous criticism from fans on internet sounding boards.

During a Friday radio appearance on ESPN 1100 for The Caring Place cancer support center, UFC president Dana White hinted there were more changes in store for the Dallas event.

"My job is to put on fights that the fans want to see," he chortled. "Hang, tight, stick around. Stay tuned."

Two things could lend credence to a new main event for UFC 103: White's make-up with Tito Ortiz, which he announced via a tweet on Friday, and the dearth of talent influx from Affliction's collapse the same day.

Is Franklin/Hendo II on ice? And is that a good thing?

Hermes Franca Asks For UFC 103 Slot

The injury bug bit former UFC lightweight contender Hermes Franca in January, forcing his withdrawal from a main event with Joe Lauzon at UFC Fight Night 17.

His knee began bothering him after his title fight with Sean Sherk, and it went further downhill in the Octagon against Frankie Edgar.

Then it basically exploded.

"I was training and it was getting better," he said. "I never hurt my knee before, so I didn't know how bad it was. Before Joe Lauzon, it was really hurting. I found out it was my ligaments, my ACL, my meniscus, and cartilage. The MRI showed me everything."

Franca recently had surgery and is two months into a seven month recovery. He can walk and teach seminars, but nothing too strenuous.

"Day by day it's getting better, thank God," he said.

In the mean time, Franca hopes to return in September, although nothing has been formally planned.

"I told Joe Silva to save me a spot on UFC 103," said Franca. "It's going to be enough time so I'm not rushing myself. I can start in July, so I have exactly four months to train. I want to try to keep it healthy."

Lauzon is also on the mend for a torn ACL and is expected to be out of action the remainder of 2009.
