Dream featherweight champion Bibiano FernandesOn June 4, Bibiano Fernandes signed for his first fight with the UFC and one week later he is out due to injury.

The unfortunate injury plague of 2012 continues to haunt UFC matchmaker Joe Silva as Fernandes is the latest fighter to fall out of a fight after suffering an injury in training.

UFC officials announced the news on Monday.

Fernandes was one of the most sought after bantamweights in the free agent market. He was expected to face Roland Delorme at UFC 149 on July 21 in Calgary.

A former Dream champion, Fernandes will now have to wait until later in the year to hopefully make his long awaited UFC debut.

Delorme is expected to remain on the UFC 149 fight card, but a new opponent has not been secured yet.

  • This latest string of injuries is causing them to absolutely gut / cannibalize cards. 148 went from one of the best cards they’ve done in a while to mediocre (other than the main event of course).

They need to get a handle on things and do it quickly. As soon as a guy gets a paper cut, stubbed toe, hang nail… he jumps ship at the drop of a hat. Since they started covering fighters during training it seems like people are dropping like flies. Of course many of the injuries are legit, but this sh!t is just out of control right now and they need to reel these guys in a bit.

    • Just read on another site that Fernandes isn’t injured, he was never in the UFC to begin with.

      From his Facebook page:

“I would like to make it clear that I am not a UFC athlete as I did not sign any contract with the UFC organization. Negotiations between the UFC and myself did take place, however, we could not resolve the issues on the table and as a result we did not come to an agreement.”

This seems pretty strange…I can’t understand why the UFC would state that he was signed when he actually wasnt. If his FB page is correct, what the hell is he thinking? DREAM goes under and you turn down an offer from the UFC? Bibiano may wanna ask Fedor how that worked out for him…

Yeah I read the same thing. Apparently they were in negotiations, but he didn’t like the contract
