The season 5 Bellator welterweight tournament is set to get underway on Sept 10 with several familiar faces and a few new ones as well.
With the winner vying for a shot at the Bellator welterweight title, which is currently wrapped around the waist of former Olympian Ben Askren, the tournament will determine the next fighter in line.
Askren will next defend the belt this fall against season 4 tournament winner Jay Hieron, and then the season 5 champion will get in line for their shot.
Heading up the tournament match-ups is an interesting bout between former Olympian and season 4 tourney runner-up Rick Hawn as he faces UFC and ‘Ultimate Fighter’ veteran Ben Saunders.
Another new face in the tournament will be former MFC welterweight champion Douglas Lima, who looks to continue his recent winning streak as he faces Steve Carl in the opening round.
“I’m not going to go in there and just lay on a guy or run around the cage,” said Lima. “When I step inside the cage, I’m ready to go to war. I’m not in there to play around.”
Multi-time Bellator veteran Dan Hornbuckle will try to finally get over the hump and get a shot at the title when he heads into the season 5 tournament against Luis Santos.
The final match-up for the first round of the welterweight tournament pits season 4 veteran Brent Weedman against Chris Lozano.
The tournament will kick off on Sept 10 at Caesars Atlantic City and will air on MTV2.
