Bellator MMA announced on Friday that light heavyweight champion Liam McGeary would face Tito Ortiz for the title on Sept. 19 in San Jose. The fight card will also feature a four-man, single-night 205-pound tournament with the tournament winner earning a title shot. The event will also showcase three Glory kickboxing bouts.
“I’m really proud to announce that on September 19 at the SAP Center, we’re going back to San Jose to put on this mega event. The mega event is going to be a three-tier show. The first part is going to be a big title fight. Our current world champion in the light heavyweight division, Liam McGeary, is going to be competing against Tito Ortiz,” said Bellator president Scott Coker during a press conference in St. Louis.
“These guys are going to fight each other on the same night. They’re going to fight twice,” said Coker. “I felt like this is a tournament that will be respected and you can count on the tournament champion getting a shot at the winner of the Liam McGeary and Tito fight.”
The tournament match-ups will be announced at a later date. The first round of the tournament will consist of two, five-minute rounds with the finals being a three, five-minute round fight.
The SAP Center will be outfitted with a cage for the MMA fights and a ring for the kickboxing bouts.
