Bellator 114 PosterBellator MMA returned to the Maverick Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Friday night with a middleweight title fight and several tournament semifinal bouts.

Alexander Shlemenko scored the 50th win of his career – his thirteenth consecutive victory – by taking out challenger Brennan Ward.

Ward came out gunning for Shlemenko and landed several solid shots, but none matched the brutal power that the Russian was firing. Ward’s brightest moments were on the mat, twice threatening a guillotine choke in the opening round.

After thwarting his attempts in round one, Shlemenko brutalized Ward’s ribs in the opening minute of round two with knees and kicks. Surprising nearly everyone, as Ward shot in for a takedown, Shlemenko caught him in a guillotine choke and quickly finished the fight.

Aside from his overall winning streak, Shlemenko has now successfully defended his Bellator middleweight championship three times.

In one half of the featherweight semifinal bracket, Matt Bessette had a strong second round against Daniel Weichel. Unfortunately for Bessette, his strong round was sandwiched by much stronger first and third-round efforts from Weichel, who was much more aggressive, scoring strong in the both the stand-up game, and with his takedowns and ground work.

Weichel won a unanimous decision to land a spot in the featherweight final.

In the other featherweight semifinal bracket, Des Green bested Will Martinez both in the striking department on the feet and with numerous takedowns. With neither fighter threatening much of a finish, Green was awarded a unanimous decision victory and moves into the final opposite Weichel.

Kendall Grove dominated the first round of his middleweight semifinal bout, nearly securing a rear naked choke on Brett Cooper and then ground and pounding him to the bell. Cooper eventually turned the tables in round two, dropping Grove with an right uppercut-right cross combination and then knocking him unconscious with a flurry of follow-up punches on the mat.

With the victory, Cooper punched his ticket to the middleweight final.

50th victory for Shlemenko…it is time for Dana to acknowledge the existence of a possible threat to Chris Weidman ( If Shlemenko is ever given a UFC contract ) otside of the UFC.

Let’s keep it real. 50th win doesn’t means much when you are fighting guys who are not even top 50 of your division:

Also, Shlemenko lost to Lombard, who had to move to lighter weight class in the UFC. How is he a threat to Weidman?

    • Baller31

He hasn’t faced anyone even near the top 10, and has a loss to Lombard on his record. He needs to be put against a decent opponent before even mentioned in same sentence as Weidman.

guess we gotta sign dan severn too, his 100 victories have got cain worried.

for real though. schlemenko is good, but as someone said he has a loss to lombard. despite that being 4 years ago, we saw how lombard struggled at mw in the ufc. weidman has a few threats in front of him already, but i could see schlemenko making some waves if he could get down to ww.

Why Viacom MMA even run another FW tournament? That division is a mess contenders-wise. You have Pitbull/Curran, winner of that faces Straus, Frodo still didnt get his title shot…and yet they do another FW tourney? For what? So another contender can sit on the shelf, waiting and hoping Viacom will be generous enough to give him that title shot in next 5 years?

    • Riddler81

Frodo cannot get a visa for the US or Canada atm which might explain why Strauss is getting the winner of Curran / Pitbull. I agree it is a little ridiculous when a tournament winner doesn’t get his title shot by the next season. Hopefully no injuries occur and we see Curran / Pitbull this season. Probably the PPV

      • Seth

Im not saying why he didnt get it – I just said he earned and didnt receive it yet. So you have 3 title challengers RIGHT NOW. AT THIS VERY MOMENT. And Viacom wants to produce challenger number four? F**k the logic…

Decent “Free” card. But did anyone see Cyborg get beat down last night on AXStv ? She got destroyed almost ko,d.

    • George Sperry

I saw the Kickboxing match and I don’t think you did. Cyborg lost but surely was NOT destroyed or nearly KO’ed.
      Save your hate.
