Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Returns to Training, Targets May or June UFC Fight

Posted on by Ken Pishna

Antonio Rogerio NogueiraAntonio Rogerio Nogueira on Wednesday revealed that he has returned to training with hopes to fight sometime in May or June.

Nogueira issued a release on Monday, noting that he returned to training, hitting mitts with boxing coach Edivaldo Badola.

The UFC had wanted to match Nogueira with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC Fight Night 37 on March 8 in London, but a lingering back injury kept Nogueira out of the fight. Gustafsson will instead face Jimi Manuwa. If the Swede wins, he is guaranteed a rematch with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones if Jones wins his next fight.

It was the second time that the UFC tried to pit Nogueira against Gustafsson. They were supposed to meet the first time in April of 2012, but Nogueira also had to withdraw from that fight due to injury.

Returning to training now, however, Nogueira plans to work his way back into shape to be ready for a late spring or early summer return against “anyone the UFC wants.”

The UFC doesn’t currently have Nogueira scheduled, but after several months out of action due to the injury, Nogueira wants to use the next several months to return to top form before he fights again.

I’m sorry, but RUA is done.

      • Jason Tracey

So the 32 year old Rua is done but the 37 year old Nogueira isn’t… I would like to hear your logic on this topic if you would oblige.

        • deepgrim

i wouldnt say rua is done just yet, but his next fight he will need the win, i think him get tapped by sonnen led alot to think he is done, he has clocked up some serious fight miles

          • julian moran

In case you missed it, he already got the win in his last fight.

          • deepgrim

no i didnt miss it thanks, but if he loses next fight he is 1 in 4 so kinda a big deal

          • Dustin R Harless

1-4, two wars thats been up for fights of the year. Look at the competition. Rua is still relevant.

          • deepgrim

i know wat your saying but the wars could eventually catch up with him. alot of the legends end their career with losing a few fights at the end. but if he wins the next fight 2 on the bounce looks like he could get back in the running. he worked with freddie roach before the sonnen fight, but only got to showcase it against te huna. i still think his next fight is very important

Rua would easily be the favorite in that fight. If rua is done, then rogerio is dead.

      • julian moran

Why is he done? Because he just koed James Te Huna?

      • greentyson

They already fought Shogun beat Minotoro via 3rd round decision. But i would like to see the rematch…

        • deepgrim

this article is about little nog

  • Mike mckinney

UFC should hire Tito Ortiz back and Match him up with rogerio. The fight would never happen due to injury, but at least it won’t tie anyone down to not fight

    • julian moran

The fight already happened and Rogerio won.

      • Bucket of Chicken

        He’s obviously a Generation TUFer.

        • Mike mckinney

I’m aware they fought. I was making a joke about them both always pulling out of fights. Sorry if you guys didn’t catch that.

          • Bucket of Chicken

            LOL @ you.

      • greentyson

Ya, a 1st round TKO due to body shots!

  • greentyson

Glad to see Lil Nog is healthy and training again and I hope he can stay injury free and get back at it! Even at 37 there are still some good/interesting match ups for Miniotoro. Keep in mind this dude has 2 wins against Alistair, a 1st round sub of Hendo, & W’s against guys like Suga, Tito, the Janitor, & Sakuraba.

  • Dustin R Harless

Plenty of possible match ups with Lil Nog left. A rematch with Rashad would make sense, if Rashad loses. There is also Phil Davis, who isnt signed to a fight. A rematch with Henderson would serve good. But being that he is a former big name, and coming off injury, I honestly think that they will put him in there with a lower caliber fighter. Someone like Fabio Maldanado, Ryan Jimmo, or a returning James Te Huna.
