Anthony Pettis vs Donald CerroneJose Aldo didn’t even get a chance to shine his belt on Saturday night before a former lightweight champion challenged him for the next crack at the title.

Just a week after his stunning knockout over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at UFC on Fox 6, Anthony Pettis texted UFC President Dana White asking to face Aldo at 145lbs.

White announced at the UFC 156 post fight press conference that the former WEC champion didn’t waste any time to make his intentions known.

“Anthony Pettis said “I want to move to 145 and fight Jose Aldo”,” White revealed. “He just texted me 10 minutes ago. He’ll meet him at 145, so we’ll see what happens.”

Pettis is currently in line for a shot at the lightweight title following the next bout between champion Benson Henderson and former Strikeforce king Gilbert Melendez, but with their fight not taking place until April, it appears “Showtime” is itching for a title fight.

In the past, Pettis has hinted at a possible move to featherweight, and now it looks he’s throwing down the gauntlet and issuing the challenge to Jose Aldo.

While other featherweight contenders like Ricardo Lamas and “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung are both right in line for potential title shots, the chance to get a competitor like Anthony Pettis into a bout with Jose Aldo would be hard to deny.

For his part, Aldo seemed to like the idea of facing Pettis in the future.

“It’s up to Dana, but I mean that is an interesting fight,” said Aldo. “I train to fight the best, I respect them all, I think to fight Pettis, he’s almost to a title shot in his own division, but it would be an interesting fight.”

Now it’s up to the UFC to decide if Aldo vs. Pettis is the fight to make next.

Im just glad Pettis got there before Maynard. The pettis fight might actually be interesting

    • Nick the tooth

Maynard would never fight Aldo, they train together at Nova Uniao!

  • Kris-tyahn

Aldo would be in trouble if Pettis moves down, after seing what Edgar was able to do in the 4th and 5th, even part of the 3rd round, then I think Pettis could hurt Aldo in the later rounds and not take the kind of damage Edgar took in the first and second rounds. Also, Aldo’s cardio is showing weaknesses more and more when he fights the championship rounds. Not a chance Aldo won the 4th or 5th rounds, Aldo should have won 48-47. Pretty sad only one judge got it right.

    • brian stevens

what makes you think pettis wouldn’t take the kind of damage edgar took? Frankie is hard to hit and Aldo did it at will in the first two rounds.

      • Kris-tyahn

Never said Pettis would t take damage, but Pettis is also extremely hard to hit, has sick cardio, something we all I or Aldo does not, but more importantly Pettis has KO POWER and he also has the same kind of power in his kicks, if anything I think Pettis has crazier kicks than Aldo. After seing what Pettis did to Ben Henderson and Cerone, I think Pettis could give Aldo a lot more trouble than Edgar & Hominick combined.

    • BobLemons

Yeah, Pettis only has one weakness we’ve seen and that’s with wrestling. That leaves Pettis looking damn good in a fight against Aldo.

  • grampappy

Pettis certainly the best all around striker.also better take him down or hes getting ko’d

    • kbroesq

Don’t get me wrong, I believe Pettis could beat Aldo, but how high are you to say to say that Pettis is the best all around striker. Pettis has amazing stand-up, no doubt, but in Aldo, we are talking about the best kicker in the UFC, and probably the best boxer too.

      • Kris-tyahn

Have you not seen Pettis’s kicks?!? I’d prefer to take an Aldo kick, than a Pettis kick.

  • make it happen…this is a potential superfight

  • Derek Lemaster

Dream matchup! Pettis wins on conditioning in the fight of the decade! Assuming the weight cut doesnt drain him (cuz he’s shredded at 155).

    • DFlow

Assuming the weight cut would be easy as Dana said in the post fight scrum that Pettis doesnt cut weight for 155 and can make 145 easily

  • Timothy Malone

I think this is a mistake by Pettis. He just clawed his way to a title shot in the competitive lightweight division. He should fight for that belt and if he loses then he can move down to the thinner featherweight division. Heck if he wins he can still move down and become an instant legend with two titles.

And I think its also bad just because Aldo is a better fighter than Henderson.

    • kbroesq

I actually think the exact opposite. It is a smart move; here’s why. If Pettis loses to Aldo, people will still want to see him fight Bendo because of their past. However if Pettis loses to Bendo first, I don’t think anyone would want to see him come down and fight Aldo after. This will add longevity to his career in the event of losses.

  • This match up is even better then Edgar. Pettis can actually throw kicks that come from all angels and do damage. Frankie is just tough. Jose needs someone with the same skill set as him to make it a good fight and Pettis is for sure the guy.

    • Kris-tyahn

Completely agree! Pettis has kicks Aldo has never seen and they are just as powerful than Aldo’s.

      • Do you like Pettis vs Aldo at FW or do you think Aldo should move up and challenge Pettis at LW?

        • Kris-tyahn

Well, I think it should be at FW only b/c thats where Aldo has the belt, and if Pettis wants to fight Aldo, he’ll have to go to him. Pettis wont pull a Silva & challenge a smaller fighter & then expect him to move up & fight him, while he’s the Champ in a lower weight division, that makes no sense. But I’d love to see that fight @ LW as well, which I’m sure it will happen, b/c Aldo will not be able to make FW for much longer, another year & I think he’s moving up. His cardio suffers every time he makes the huge weight cut, which is why I think Pettis could really hurt Aldo.
          And you?!?

          • The only reason I’d like to see Aldo move up is b/c I feel he’s done enough in the division. No disrespect to Ricardo Lamas who I feel is next in line. Aldo would be even stronger at LW and will have the speed and conditioning to go with it. And what do you think of Faber vs Edgar at FW? Even though Faber is BW. But in general what are your thoughts on that? I like it, I like it a lot.

  • drkdisciple

This is really stupid that someone without a win at 145 would get an immediate title shot! If Pettis thinks Aldo is an easier fight then Henderson he is sadly mistaken!

    • Icepick

Edgar didn’t have a win at 145 and got a title shot dummy!

      • drkdisciple

Where on my comment did i say that Edgar had a win at 145 b4 his title shot? I simply stated that no one deserves to get a title shot in their first fight in a new weight class!

        • kbroesq

I don’t think it is stupid on the part of the UFC, but I DO think it is stupid on the part of the fighter coming down to 145. They should WANT to take a non-title fight before facing one of the best fighters of all time. Not sure if it would make a difference (it didn’t for Florian), but I think as far as the UFC as a business is concerned, they want to make the superfight, and not risk a loss on the part of the guy coming down.

          • drkdisciple

I agree dude…from the ufc point of view it is all about the money not about what makes sense or not!

      • Lfavelino

Well drkdisciple said it’s really stupid, he didn’t say it never happened before. I don’t see why he’s the dummy out of you two.lfa

  • shereko

Everyone says and keeps saying that 185 is the weakest division in all of UFC, yet 145 has nobody for Aldo that isn’t immediately dropping down from 155. Aldo should say F it and move up to 155

    • Kris-tyahn

Not true at all, Korean Zombie and Cub Swanson would be two fights I’d like to see. I Know Cub was KTFO in his first fight, but he’s looked impressive his last 3 fights. But Korean Zombie would be interesting, but I actually see Pettis beating Aldo. Pettis is one bad man. He’s got insane kicks and his kicks are way more diverse than Aldo’s, just watch Pettis vs Cerone or any of Pettis’s fights. Pettiscan throw leg kicks from anywhere, regardless of the angle.

      • shereko

I never said Pettis wasnt good… The division is weak, and you’re reachin at Cub, Pulver put him out in a min in WEC…

        • Kris-tyahn

Who cares what Pulver did to Cub how many yrs ago?!? 6 yrs ago … yeah I don’t think Cub has improved since then, you idiot! Look who’s reaching, talking about fights that happened 6 yrs ago, good one! GSP wasn’t even champ then, but he hasn’t improved since then either.

          • shereko

Ride **** much? You should get more pissed behind your keyboard… Point being Cub doesnt step up to big fights, ohh so he loses then is matched up for another loss then he comes back up. Good enough for the roster and title contender is a difference moron. So you’re saying Cub could beat Aldo? Because I say he isnt in the same class. I also said nothing against Pettis, I actually think he has a great shot, and I think Aldo is one of the best p4p, so does that mean its not a weak division? Stfu and get more pissed because someone doesnt agree with you and your precious message board you patrol…

          • shereko

Who cares what you did ever? Point is Cub doesnt step up in big fights, is he going to beat Faber? Gate keeper…

          • shereko

And yes I know Faber has been at 135 not 145… But he mentioned moving back up

        • Kris-tyahn

BTW: Cub only won his last 3 fights by TKO/KO! But he did lose 6 yrs ago ….. WOW!!!

          • shereko

I could care less what you think keyboard tough guy, and wow you really show your intelligence how upset you get all over this post when someone doesnt agree with you on your precious message board you patrol waiting to snap… Lol So you think Cub can beat Aldo?? There is a diff between gate keeper and contender, but nobody can disagree with you because you’re the all might mma board knowitall

  • gnodeb

UFC need to get rid of titles… just give us 3v3 fights with bats… this is boring…
