Anthony Pettis: ‘I’m in the UFC; I Want a UFC Title Shot’ (Video)

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Anthony Pettis and Jeremy Stephens at UFC 136Anthony Pettis is the former WEC lightweight champion, but made the move over to the Octagon when Zuffa decided to fold the promotion into the UFC and absorb its fighters.

He was initially slated to fight the winner of the UFC lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard at UFC 125. That fight, however, ended in a draw with a rematch on tap.

Now, more than a year and a half later, Pettis is sidelined with a shoulder injury, hopefully targeting an October return.

What that means for Pettis’ next fight is still unclear, but what is clear is that he wants at title shot fairly soon and he wants it to be a UFC title shot.

A UFC record of 2-1 isn’t going to get you anywhere in the lightweight division. Fight some more upper-echelon guys like Diaz or Maynard before crying about getting a title shot.

I think it should be Pettis vs. Diaz for a #1 spot. But you have to agree with his point that he came in to the UFC with the WEC belt and was told he would have a shot at the winner of Edgar vs Maynard 2/3…never happened…so he is kind of owed the fight.

I agree that it should be Diaz v Petris for a shot, but he screwed his own pooch on the title shot. You take a fight and get owned, basically made to look like an amatuer, then you give up that shot. Then he thinks two wins over non top ten fighters gets him a shot. No Way!!! Plus Stephens won that fight.

I dunno if I would say he got owned by Guida…Guida laid on him for the whole fight. But on the flip said Pettis did nothing to get him off him really.

I dunno…I think regardless of who makes it through…no one will touch Bendo for a while…

Holy crap. Does anybody proofread on this site?

give Pettis vs Maynard and that would be #1 contender fight..but after Diaz..Diaz clearly deserves next title fight next after benson defeats Edgar again soon

Pettis should have gotten a title shot a long time ago but now he probably has a take another fight to prove himself. Maybe a number one contender match against Maynard or Cerrone if he wins next month.

You know what they say; Just keep winning.

He can piss and moan about getting a title shot all he wants, but the fact remains that the pecking order for the immediate future is locked in. Complaing isn’t going to change that. All he can do at this point is to beat a top guy and wait his turn, or hope someone gets hurt.

We all know thats not how it works in the UFC ! Pissing and moaning seems to be exactly how you get a tittle shot in the UFC. Thats exactly how sonnen got a second shot at Silve and also how Edgar got a rematch with Henderson ! The squeaky wheel gets the greese.

      • Triggerman99

Yeah I agree, but what I mean is that in the immediate future (i.e. the next two title fights) it’s just not possible for him to get a title shot, and yet he continues to lobby for just that; a title shot right away. He knows it’s not possible, so why does he keep it up? Just fight someone else and lay off the whining for a little while. You’ll get your chance if you win.
