The war of words between welterweights Anthony Johnson and John Howard will finally result in a fight. The two 170-pounders will square off on March 21 at the “UFC on Versus” event currently slated to be the promotion’s debut event on the Versus Network.
The news was first reported by MMAJunkie.com and confirmed independently by MMAWeekly.com with sources close to the fight indicating it’s all but a done deal.
Considered one of the rising stars at welterweight, Anthony Johnson looked like he was on the fast track to the top ten until he ran into Josh Koscheck in his last fight. After a back and forth battle early on, Koscheck gained the upper hand in the 2nd round, getting a rear naked choke submission.
As for John Howard, as MMAWeekly announced earlier this week, the fighter just signed a new 4-fight deal with the UFC, and first off is settling a rivalry with Johnson in the Octagon.
3-0 in the UFC, Howard is looking to take a step up in competition and facing Johnson is just what the doctor ordered.
The bout between Johnson and Howard is expected to make the main card for the show which is currently headlined by Jon Jones taking on Brandon Vera in a light heavyweight match-up.
