Anderson Silva Reportedly Wants Rematch; Chris Weidman Expected It All Along

Posted on by Ken Pishna

Anderson-Silva-UFC-162-weigh-2-478x270Everything leading up to UFC 162 and everything since has pointed to a rematch between Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman.

UFC president Dana White, leading up to Saturday night’s fight in Las Vegas, promised that if Silva lost, which he did, that an immediate rematch would be in the offing.

Weidman said the same thing and reiterated that sentiment immediately following the fight.

“He’s unbeatable, the fricking Bruce Lee of mixed martial arts,” the new champion said after the fight. “I just have to say all respect to Anderson Silva. I’ll give him and immediate rematch if he wants to do it.”

Silva initially hesitated about a rematch, saying that it was now Weidman’s time as champion.

“Chris is the champion now. I finish my work. I no more fight for the belt.”

He backtracked on that statement at the post-fight press conference, saying he just needed some time to mull things over, which is understandable considering that he hadn’t lost in seven years and 17 fights. Getting knocked out and then immediately asked what his future held was most certainly a discombobulating experience.

“He wants it. That’s right after his bell’s been rung, and I’m sure it was surreal for him,” Weidman said on Wednesday’s Jim Rome Show when asked about the possibility of a rematch. “He just lost for the first time in seven years, he got knocked out, and that’s something he has a lot of pride in is his stand-up and having a good chin.

“His mind wasn’t in the right place when he’s doing an interview.  We’re doing a rematch.”

An MMAFighting.com report citing sources close to Silva seems to back Weidman’s assurance that there would be a rematch coming down the pike.  The report stated that Silva had already determined he does want the rematch and he wants it before the end of the year. He doesn’t want to wait for Super Bowl weekend, which White had initially speculated might be good timing for the two to lock horns again.

White then shifted gears and told the LA Times that he was considering the rematch for UFC 168 on Dec. 28, and pushing that event’s main event between Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate back to Super Bowl weekend.

Silva’s camp, however, was unavailable for comment at the time of publication, but it wouldn’t be surprising that Silva – after having the longest championship reign in UFC middleweight history come to an end – would want to redeem himself as soon as possible.

Weidman’s best chance of winning is to take Silva down and submit him, but I see Silva winning the rematch.

    • Eric Chism

Anderson has been doing that taunting bit for 7 years. Weidman is the first guy to make him pay for it. Know that Silva got put down, I think he will come back with a new desire to get that belt back. I don’t think he will drop his hands and beg for a KO anymore,

      • Chris M

you are soo wrong so ur telling he he taunted leben franklin henderson lutter irving and others its only later in his career where he made it a regular!

        • Maddawgmar

He is right. He KO’d or submitted those guys fast. Your forgetting Lattes, Maia, Cote, and Griffin. If he didn’t finish them quickly he may have goofed on them.

          • Cptmats

Cote should not be in that list, He didn’t finish Cote quick because he cracked Cote with hard shots and Cote just smiled at him And Silva did not like it when he felt Cote’s power !
Maia and Leites are the only two other times he toyed with his opponents.

          • Maddawgmar

Your right, he didn’t toy with Griffin, patting him on the head after he knocked him down instead of finishing him. And He could have finished Cote if he tried.

          • Cptmats

How many rounds did Silva Griffin go again ?
And he did try and finish Cote, he just couldn’t do it !

          • Maddawgmar

Check your info again on the Cote fight. Look up Silva Cote fight on google watch vids if you want or even espn report on the fight. He clowned around. Also that is my point. He clowned Forrest into making a mistake. Check my comment down the page.

          • Cptmats

I don’t need to check anything I’ve seen both fight enough to know he couldn’t finish Cote and didn’t clown around with Griffin

          • SUCK

actually he toyed with Bonnar, too.

          • Guest

Actually, he may have been able to finish Cote, but Cote finished himself by hurting his knee just by standing there. The fight was stopped and Silva wanted to keep fighting.

          • Cptmats

So did Cote, But Cote had already taken Silva’s best shots by then and smiled at him !

    • John Bunch

Question is, will he drop the Cha-cha routine and take the clown make-up off? I used to love Silva when he destroyed Franklin and took the UFC by storm…I hope he learns to respect MMA again and takes it seriously. When I saw him go down, it was like watching poetic justice be met out in front of my eyes…the only similar experience was when Douglas floored Tyson.

      • Justin Ernst

Somebody should do up a fight poster for the rematch with Silva in full clown garb. That would be perfect.

    • tyrone

Youtube video of anderson crying over loss, for you conspiracy theorists, lol

  • diazfan209

I’m still at a loss as to why Anderson was playing the ego-game w/ Weidman during their bout…… as if Chris had been disrespecting him & his family (like Sonnen did) before the fight or something……. which wasn’t the case at all. Weidman expressed how he respects Anderson, but felt confident he would win – don’t know how that would lead Anderson to taunt Weidman more than any other fighter.

    • Maddawgmar

My personal opinion is Silva, after the first round, felt that he wanted no more of Weidman on the ground. So he decided that he wanted Weidman to stand and fight with him and not take him down, and that was the only way to have Weidman not shoot. Who is gonna shoot for a takedown if the guy you fighting isn’t blocking his head. Just my thought, who really knows but Silva.

    • tyrone

In silvas mind before fight he wasn’t really as confident in this fight because he knew it was a bad matchup, then he gets pummled first rd. at beginning then gets to feet and in his mind hes thinking i got up i got a chance. At this time hes got better control of himself cause hes not being gnp at present. Then bell rings, hes hyped, thinking i made out of the rd, i probably can win.at this time is the only time hes ever had confidence in self in whole weidman fight. He starts yelling, hes believing in self now, thinking like a diva, “how dare he gnp the great silva “!!! Then bell rings reality is in his face immediately in the form of weidman, weidman pressing the action like a pitbull. Then boom, ktfo, then a lil gnp on way out door, for putting his nasty lips on weidmans at weigh in. Disrespectful piece of …

      • Guest

“Weidman pressing the action liek a pitbull” lmfao!!! Weidman won fair & square lets leave it at that. I dont know who annoys me more Silva NUTHUGGERS or Silva HATERS… Respect new the Champ & Respect the Legend. Stfu about anything else

        • tyrone

You sissy ,you stfu!!! Its the way i said it ho!

    • MuayThaiFood

And nothing in interviews pre or post fight to disrespect him in anyway. Nothing but respectful words back and forth between the two. Kinda strange indeed.

    • Cptmats

That’s easy ! Silva was trying to get Weidman too throw a good enough shot so he could take a dive

      • Sir_Roy

        Sadly, I don’t think you’re wrong.

  • Kris-tyahn

Weidman is in Silvas head and he’s got even more confidence after his KO! Weidman had ring rust and just tested his newly surgically repaired shoulder, and he still took Silva down in the first round an then KO’d him in the 2nd. Weidman will be much better in their rematch and he won’t need to worry about the shoulder or the rehab. I think Weidmans going to take Silva down and GnP him until he’s KTFO again, or Weidman gets the submission. I had Weidman in the first fight and I’ll take Weidman in the rematch!!! Bigger, better and Stronger Sonnen = bad match up for Silva! All the pressure will be on Silva, even more so than the 1st fight, another loss to Weidman or anything but a highlight reel finish and Silvas legacy will take another hit!

How can it not?!? Silva has as many title defenses as Weidman has Pro Fights!!!

    • fsunoles10

a stronger sonnen? i like weidman but he’s not stronger nor does he have as strong of wrestling as chael thats reality bud.

    • tyrone

      Agreed

    • South.NZ.MMA

Umm better than Sonnen in Wrestling and submissions but not stronger

    • Cptmats

More like Silva is in Weidman’s head. Now even Weidman knows he couldn’t beat Silva Silva had to do it for him !

      • Baller31

That makes 0 sense. Weidman beat silva in every area., and is even more confident than before. Now silva knows he is no longer the best.

        • Cptmats

          Makes perfect sense !
So it was Weidman beating Silva in every area that leads you to believe Weidman has no chance in a rematch ?

Weidman did not beat Silva in any area ! He pushed Weidman aside like a chump when he shot for take downs and had to dance around in front of him for a round and a half before Weidman threw a decent enough punch for him to go down !

          • Baller32

Wtf fight did you watch? Weidman took silva down easily, pounded on him for a bit, then tried to submit him. Silva stopped one takedown. Silva attacked hard with kicks and punches and didn’t even faze Weidman. Then silva got ktfo when he pulled his usual antics. He landed more strikes, and more takedowns than silva…. Plus he was conscious at the end, and that’s kind of a big deal in mma as I understand it.

          • Cptmats

Im starting to think you might actually be dumb enough to believe that !

          • Baller31

Not only are you in denial, but you know nothing about mma

  • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

This fight is important for both guys. Since fighting Maia, Silva has acted crazy in his fights. But you can’t tell me, that he was trying to lore Weidman in, and he practices that in training. He was acting like a complete jackass. And I love the guy. Weidman needs to get this Silva rematch out of the way so he can really establish himself and defend the title against the rest of the division. If Weidman wins I give him my best, I’m not a bad sport. But if he wins I’m looking forward to see him fight guys like Belfort, Bisping, Sonnen?, even Munoz if he can pull off an exciting win; I’m a fan of his but that fight against Tim B. wasn’t very good.

    • marcus miles

You didnt like that fight? how come?

      • Randy Humphries

that fight was awesome , high level grappling and alot of transitions

      • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

I was hoping Munoz would have been able to stop Boetch on the feet. He did a good job and completely controlled Tim on the ground but I would have liked to see him do more out there. Of course there was a display of high level grappling, that’s Munoz biggest strength. I’m a Munoz fan and I just want to see him add more to skill set. Matt Hughes became a terrific submission artist. GSP has great kickboxing footwork to go along with his wrestling. Josh Koscheck got heavily into striking and although may not be the most impressive compared to other guys still made that a big part of his game. Just my opinion.

  • tyrone

Anderson doesn’t really want a rematch, not in his heart cause he really knows that he really got ktfo!!!!!,Also manhandled and gnp at beginning of match and a little gnp at very end of fight putting his nasty aas lips on weidmans at weighin .
Chris weidman is the new and improved and younger randy couture. Chris weidman, right now at this very minute is the most famous man in the world!!!!!!

    • South.NZ.MMA

Heavy weight champion Cain .v fit in this convo anywhere?? Much better wrestler that Randy in my opinion, beat Brock with great wrestling… but Randy wrestling vs Brock Wrestling no match. what you think?

      • p3ezy

Cain may be an american and a great wrestler but hes a racist. Full of hate, else he would remove racist tattoo. Hes very devisive with such a tattoo and doesn’t represent all americans because of such a statement in form of tattoo

        • MANNY

WTF are you talking about there is nothing racist about his tattoo. I’m sure he’s proud he was born here, just because he has a tattoo that symbolizes praise to his culture in no way makes it racist! I hate when ppl see read an artilce or hear a stupid story & try to run with it. Do yourself a favor & realize how stupid you sound & make sure to not say something SO STUPID! again.

          • p3ezy

You may want to be gullible all your life, but not me. For instance last night, your mom was over here cleaning dog poop up out of my yard for a beer. I see the stock you come from you bbiittcchh

          • Cptmats

You call Cain a racist and then make a comment about a latino doing you’re yard work ?

I think Cain is a racist piece of shit….but so are you !

          • p3ezy

Im mexican myself.cain doesn’t. represent me or my people with his devisive tattoo. I do believe you shouldn’t jump to conclusions, and certainly no one is a piece of sh.. I know you probably felt high and mighty by sounding in on such a hot topic but you sounded hypocritical, you always on here calling people names and whats different? Your words are hate filled.

          • p3ezy

I didnt know she was a latino, but i am. It just shows your ignorance. Maybe you should get you some business, mr.busybody. i am latino and dont approve of cains tattoo, its embarrassing to us latinos who are trying our best. I personally believe everyone is equal, not pieces of s***. Maybe you should get therapy for your hatred

        • South.NZ.MMA

Come on mate the tattoo says Brown Pride hes Mexican..would you be happier if tattoo read all American? Its just his way of expressing his Pride in his Culture? Is Anderson a racist for flying the Brazilian flag not the American flag when he walks in or after fights? M.M.A is a combination of different martial art forms and disciplines from a diversity of many different cultures and nationalities..Cain .V. vs Jon J. now that’s a super fight id pay to watch..

    • Whhhaaatt

Tyrone biggums. To much crack for you

  • dgs

If Silva comes in and fights in the rematch the way he did when he was first brought into the UFC, then Weidman will no longer be champion. There is nothing I saw in their fight that leads me to believe Weidman has a snowball’s chance in hell of beating that version of Anderson Silva.

    • Brent

      Ummmmm……

    • silvas daddy

You probably thought silva was gonna win the first fight too. Lol, so so very sad, call a doctor, tell him you cant think right

      • DB

You’re out of your mind if you think Chris won because of anything besides a lucky punch because Silva was clowning to dam much

        • John Bunch

lucky…are you f’ing serious? you can say the setup was handed to him on a silver platter…but to call it lucky is pretty incredible.

        • natpaukar7

I would say Silva gave it to him intentionally…also…I do believe that when this rematch happens Silva will come in overweight and ask for a catchweight so he doesn’t have to take the belt…destroy Weidman like he could’ve done this time and then move on to bigger better fights…Jon Jones…and other top LHW…remember this in 6 months when it comes true…hahah perhaps.

          • Berry

If Silva comes in overweight then Weidman could simply tell him to get stuffed with his rematch. Weidman has to accept to fight at a catchweight because it would be a breach of the original contract that they sign when they take the fight. So no, Anderson won’t do that

        • tyrone

Weidman landed way more punches than one. Landed quite a few standing. All this led up to snatching silvas heart out of chest and silva collapsing from a little left hook. I got video of fight, i suggest you watch it more than once.silva landed a few kicks and two punches. The dancing may have been glitter but no substance in fight.

        • Baller31

You realize Weidman landed more strikes and significant strikes than silva, right?

          • Cptmats

Yeh, Silva made sure of that.

          • Baller31

            By sucking?

          • Cptmats

By standing in front of him with his hands down and refusing to swing back……….as if Weidman could actually stand with Silva, lol

          • Baller31

Weidman was standing… Silva was on his back unconscious

          • Cptmats

like i told your handi cap ass before Silva made sure of that !
            wow you’re dumb !

          • Baller31

You’re an unintelligent douchebag. I don’t mind debating, but you just spout idiotic opinions that aren’t supported by facts

          • Cptmats

            Debating ? You don’t debate ! you’re a troll ! Douche bag !

    • Justin Ernst

Of course he has a “snowball’s” chance in hell. He basically won the first round. He could win a decision if he gets to the ground, or he could pound him out on the ground. I agree that if silva were to take the fight seriously, that he should be a solid favorite, but weidman has plenty chance. The odds makers are going to hate silva. They have to base them on whether they think he will try.

    • Baller31

You must have watched a different fight. I saw nothing in that fight that would lead me to believe silva has a chance in hell of beating Weidman.

  • Bpfoh

Weidman was not talking about Anderson Silva when he said the Bruce Lee comment. This is misquoted or taken out of context because Weidman was referring to god with that statement. Not to be a bible thumper, but if you are going to quote someone do it right.

    • Brent

      Agreed

    • Darin

So, he referred to God as “Bruce Lee”? That sounds sacriligious.

    • Mike mckinney

Chris was saying that he was on gods path to win the title, but sarcasticly stating that god put the “freaking Bruce lee of mixed martial arts” in his path.

Pretty much telling everyone he wasn’t nearly as confident as he was saying he was. Just like everyone fighting champs.
He thought he would win, he just knew he wasn’t suppose to.

    • South.NZ.MMA

Hi watched interview again and he is referring Anderson to Bruce lee and thanks God for giving him the power to beat the unstoppable Bruce lee of M.M.A.. : )

    • MuayThaiFood

That makes no sense. Referring to God as Bruce Lee? Would make more sense if he referred to God as Steven Seagal.

  • AboveTheClouds

Ken, you’re parsing your Weidman quotes about Silva.Watch the post-fight interview again.

Weidman’s quote about Bruce Lee was, “Thank God. The only way this could have happened is God. He’s the unbeatable fricking Bruce Lee of mixed martial arts. And thank God he gave me the power to do it.”

Weidman’s quote about Silva was after Rogan had him watch the replay of the knockout, to which Weidman said, “No one’s invincible and hey, I just have to say all respect to Anderson Silva. I’ll would love to do a rematch if he would want to do it.”

    • MuayThaiFood

      I didn’t know God was a fan.

  • Justin Ernst

Soooo….None of this is coming from Anderson. Leave it to Dana to just schedule the fight and then act like Silva is chickening out. Though in this case I don’t really mind. Silva acted like a disrespectful punk. Have at him Dana.

  • The best eva

Anderson silva will win just like he should have in the first place. His legacy will continue as the goat actively fighting. He’ll win the trilogy and the super fight talk will be brought back

  • The best eva

Losing the first round like that had nothing to do with losing the fight the way he did. He’s lost opening rounds like that before and won

  • tyrone

Youtube video of anderson crying over loss, for you conspiracy theorists, lol

  • MANNY

I am still in love with silva.i just wish i could have his baby.

  • ronbo

Chris best chance is to submit him?? HOw bout knock him out again?? Silva could have won if he tried?? HE DID TRY NUTHUGGERS. No one is beating wiedman and I hopethey do the rematch soon so I can hear some more pathetic excuses.

  • jacob

that fight showed weidman the real deal. he wasnt fightin like maia, or letes, or bonnar or griffin. he came sharp and tagged him clean. but if anderson performs like what he did to rich them years ago its gonna be ultra brutal for chris

  • Fried_Chicken

Silva’s loss to Weidman only proves that Silva’s destruction of Chris Leben was a complete fluke!!!!!

  • Hugh Shakeshaft

Weidman will win again, this time by G &P.
