Alistair Overeem vs. Bigfoot Silva Official… with Conditions; UFC 156 Tickets On Sale Friday

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

The UFC makes a big deal out of its Super Bowl weekend event that it holds annually in Las Vegas, and 2013 is no different.

With tickets on sale this Friday, the promotion on Monday confirmed the majority of its UFC 156 main card set for Feb. 2 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Leading the way is a UFC featherweight title bout between champion Jose Aldo and challenger, and 145-pound first-timer, Frankie Edgar.

A heavyweight bout between Alistair Overeem and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva was also confirmed.  It comes with a special stipulation, however, as Overeem is still serving out a nine-month Nevada Athletic Commission suspension.

Overeem’s sanction comes to an end as the year closes out, but he still has to go before the commission in January to receive approval for a license to fight in the state, so there are no gimmies. UFC officials wouldn’t book him if they weren’t all but sure he would regain licensure, but any promotion of the bout comes with the caveat “pending approval and licensing by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.”

Other bouts firmed up for the UFC 156 pay-per-view portion of the fight card include former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and a bout between top welterweights Jon Fitch and Demian Maia.

“Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar is a fight the fans have wanted to see for a long time and on Feb. 2, the superfight is going to happen,” UFC president Dana White said. “Our fights on Super Bowl weekend are always some of the biggest and best and this year will be no different.

“In addition to the Aldo vs. Edgar featherweight title fight, we’ve got Alistair Overeem vs. ‘Bigfoot’ Silva, Rashad Evans vs. ‘Lil Nog,’ and Jon Fitch taking on Demian Maia.”

Bigfoot took a serious beating from Velasquez, and Im shocked he beat Travis Browne. That was a fluke.

It seems the UFC want to promote Overeem a bit more before they give him a title shot.
My guess is, Overeem by Ko in the first round. Then a super fight for the title, which Overeem will win.

    • dathump

I think it was Overeem that didn’t want to wait for a title fight, he wanted any fight as soon as he was cleared to fight. Works out well for the UFC though.

  • PhranktheTank

If this card doesn’t fall apart it’s gonna be amazing
