Alistair-Overeem-UFC-141-Prefight_6189-460x270An injury during training has forced Alistair Overeem out of UFC 160 against Junior dos Santos.

For the second time, Alistair Overeem vs. Junior dos Santos is off the table.

MMAFighting first reported on Wednesday that Overeem suffered an undisclosed injury during training that will sideline the former K-1 and Strikeforce heavyweight champion for four to five weeks.

Overeem and dos Santos were originally scheduled to meet in the UFC 146 main event on May 26, 2012, but Overeem tested positive for an high ratio of epistestosterone to testosterone during a pre-fight drug screening, resulting in the Nevada State Athletic Commission refusing to grant him a license for a period of nine months.  Former champion Frank Mir replaced Overeem against dos Santos.

Overeem returned at UFC 156 against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and was promised a title shot if he won.  Silva pulled off the upset in a come-from-behind knockout of Overeem in the opening moments of the final round.

Following the fight, it was revealed that Overeem passed his mandatory drug test, but in a strange turn of events, the tests showed lower than normal testosterone levels.

The UFC 160 bout was made possible because dos Santos was defeated by Cain Velasquez in the UFC 155 main event on Dec. 29, 2012, losing the heavyweight title.

Fans will now have to wait even longer for the anticipated Overeem vs. dos Santos match.

It’s unclear whether the UFC will push back the bout to a later date or replace Overeem.  An announcement is expected in the coming days.

  • Mark hunt ? If he can make it

  • Bayik

Oh cmon! i was excited for this! I hope JDS gets an opponent fast. Just when i thought i might see Overeem getting KO twice in a row. maybe next time.. maybe next time..

    • bajafox

      I vote for Big Country

      • Scotty_O

lol I don’t think I can stomach another 15 minutes of that, after that fight, I think Big Country has a solid argument for toughest sob on the planet!

  • Usmc8408

It’s not that strange that his levels were lower than normal. After getting off the juice it takes time for your levels to return to normal. The ole nut sack doesn’t produce testosterone like normal when you’re taking in the synthetic stuff.

    • Yannick Messaoud

Haha another case for TRT yeah he juice like crazy at one point in K1 he must have been like 280 with 4% bodyfat, he abused steroids like crazy and now he is going to pay for it big time.

  • robc

So let’s get this straight, he fights, fails a drug test, suspended for a year, comes back fights again, has the fight one and decides to do some showboating and get’s his ass knocked out, now he get’s injured? This is the investment Dana White was dying to have?

    • bajafox

      Summarized perfectly

  • Adam Bianski

Mark Hunt Please God Mark Hunt. Not because I think it would be a good fight but because I am ready to see Big fat Mark Hunt get put to sleep by a top MMA fighter.

  • pistol10

Plz Dana White make mark hunt vs dos santos!

  • Fuzzmasta

I think this is a strategic move. Overeem is mentally not ready for JDS. His confidence has to be rocked after getting tooled by Bigfoot.

    • Supaman

i think Overeem’s confidence is fine. he only got caught b/c he got too cocky and was coming in w/ his hands down daring Bigfoot to hit him.

Injuries are extremely common and I wouldn’t read too much into this. Hopefully, the injury isn’t too serious and we’ll get to see this fight.

  • Mike ;/

He fell and hurt his vagina.

  • fede

    Mark Hunt in!!!

    • jeremy

      I like that idea..

  • diazfan209

JDS is a former champion, he should be fighting a heavyweight that’s on a decent win streak & not one that’s coming off an embarrassing loss

  • GoNoles

i wouldnt mind seeing the ufc pull dc for jds and send mark hunt to fight mir.

  • Expected

I think Overeem must have injured his balls, his chin got broken long ago. With the the only kind of intersting bout off they need to find a replacement fast cause nobody is paying to see bigF get raped

  • George Sperry

    Who didn’t see this coming?

  • Oswald Cobblepott

  • Mike mckinney

They might do mark hunt vs. jds, but I just don’t see it. I’m obviously not anyone special I’m match making, but if hunt gets a bigger name guy I just really think its Shane carwin. (If he ever gets back in there).
I just don’t imagine the UFC risking jds and his status to a guy like hunt yet. I could be wrong but I’m usual pretty in tune with the UFC’s match making.
I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see what the other guy said happen. Daniel just might get pulled from frank Mir, and he might get jds. However if that is done and The UFC would really push for DC to stay at heavyweight. Can’t move him to fight jds to then just leave the division.
Kongo might get involved in here somewhere too. I don’t recall him being matched up with anyone.

    • Joey

You mean Roy Nelson vs Kongo at UFC 159?

  • JDS needs to fight so he can get that rubber match with Cain. There’s no way the will wait for Reem to heal up. No offense to Mark Hunt but I couldn’t imagine the UFC putting him in against JDS. He is so far behind on the ground game he would never be able to handle guys like Cain, Cormier or Frank Mir. I’d rather see Hunt vs Carwin or Nelson.

  • Rezsurfer

Sounds like a bunch of white boys who’s still mad there hillbilly Brock got sent to retirement by Alistair. Never cry foul when Chael, or others do it openly, but Brock got ko’ed now your all pouting and being haters

  • Cereal Killer

I have long questioned every “star” outside of the UFC for a long time now. Ubereem is not impressing me…
