Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Johnson will meet in the main event of the next UFC on FOX event, which will take place on Jan. 24 from the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm.

UFC officials announced the bout on Wednesday, making it only the second event in the promotion’s history to be held in a stadium. The Tele2 Arena is an all-purpose stadium with a retractable roof that seats 30,000 spectators.

Alexander Gustafsson vs Anthony JohnsonThe fight between Gustafsson and Johnson has been several months in the making. The bout was initially sidelined when Johnson was suspended by the UFC pending an internal investigation into and the eventual outcome of a legal matter.

While the case was unfolding, the UFC shifted to a possible bout between Gustafsson and Rashad Evans. Evans, however, wasn’t quite ready to commit, as he is still recovering from a lingering knee injury.

The legal case against Johnson was recently dropped, freeing him to get back in the fight with Gustafsson.

In announcing the bout, UFC officials declared that the fight would be for a shot at the light heavyweight championship, currently wrapped around Jon Jones’ waist. Jones has a fight just weeks before the Gustafsson vs. Johnson bout, however, as he faces Daniel Cormier in the UFC 182 main event on Jan. 3 in Las Vegas.

Gustafsson narrowly lost his title bid to Jones last year in September. He bounced back with an impressive knockout of the then-undefeated Jimi Manuwa earlier this year.

“This is going to be an epic event,” Gustafsson said. “I want more than 30,000 fans to come and witness me win on January 24. Then I’m going to go and get the title! My journey back to the top starts now. ”

Johnson has won eight consecutive bouts, six of them by knockout. He holds back-to-back victories over Phil Davis and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira since returning to the UFC in April.

“This fight might be on his home turf, but I’m ready to go over to Sweden and prove that I’m the next in the line for the UFC light heavyweight title,” Johnson said. “I’m not intimidated by fighting in front of Alex’s hometown fans. I’m going to go in there and look for the knockout like I do in all of my fights. I can’t wait for this!”

The main card will air live on FOX and the prelims on FOX Sports 1 in the United States.

    This fight is guaranteed violence

  • shakejunt

yesssss! it was the only match that made sense, but didn’t mean it was going to get made. this will be the first time a lhw challenger will have defeated an appropriately ranked contender to earn his title shot in a long while.

    • ShakeJuntIsaStupidShit

That is by no means true. That’s just your opinion. BTW your opinion is incorrect.

      • shakejunt

look at the contender’s last fights prior: dc beat the shell of dan henderson, glover beat bader coming off a win over vladdy, gus beat manuwa, chael… yeah, vitor beat rumble (who wasn’t ranked), rashad beat phil davis after a win over nog, machida knocked out randy, rampage beat matt hamill. rashad was the most deserving in this regard.

so instead of just saying i’m wrong, why don’t you tell me HOW i’m wrong mr. high and mighty.

        • snapdad

          well said sir

        • TheCerealKiller

No reason to argue with a guest account that doesn’t at least post with the same name each time. It only takes half a man to make a faceless account.

          • shakejunt

you’re right, but i get entertainment out of it. they’ll get bored of trolling when they realize i’m having fun.

      • Sean

Him being “wrong” is just YOUR opinion. Why don’t you enlighten us as to how he is wrong? Edify us…. Please

  • Seth

God damn…I know majority of us wants Gus/Jones 2, but…DANG! Anthony may really spoil that…and I wouldn’t be upset. Him Vs Jones would nice one too. No matter which one wins this one, fans win big time anyway 😀

    • uncle

I would like to see Rumble fight Bader and let Gus have the winner
      of DC vs Jones

  • solo

Just hope everyone stays healthy so that we can have a great event. To bad we’re gonna lose one contender, but the match-up is fuc**** exciting.

  • Kenny F’n Powers

    Sh!t just got real.

  • Guest

Rumble poses no threat to Jones. Like Rampage & Teixeira, Rumble is just all power and no ground game. Jones will pick him apart like he did with Quinton & Glover. Gustafsson will fight smart & use his reach advantage to win. He still poses the biggest threat to Jon Jones.

  • weevo

I call it now….. Johnson by knockout.

  • TruthTalks

Somebody’s getting knocked out, unless Gustaffson runs or tries to lay and pray for the victory. Rumble Johnson by early knock out.

    • realtalkmma

Nah. Gustafsson is a better boxer, better fighter all around, better foot work, and has the height and reach advantage. If he fights even a little smart he’ll get the TKO or decision.
