Alexander-Gustafsson-8089-UFC-141-478x270Fight ready and cut healing, UFC light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson hopes to be back in action as soon as possible.

Gustafsson’s manager, Manos Terzitane, told UFC Tonight that the 26-year-old Swede is a week or two away from being cleared to fight.

Once cleared from the cut that forced  him out of the UFC on Fuel TV 9 main event against Gegard Mousasi, Gustafsson is willing to step in on short notice if a light heavyweight falls out of a scheduled bout.

Gustafsson is eyeing a title shot with the winner between champion Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen, who fight on April 27.  If he’s unable to get a title shot, Gustafsson would like to face Lyoto Machida in a number-one contender fight.

Gustafsson (15-1) is on a six-fight winning streak and hasn’t lost since April 2010.  He last fought on Dec. 8, defeating former light heavyweight titleholder Maricio “Shogun” Rua by unanimous decision.

The UFC has been informed of Gustafsson’s willingness to accept a short notice fight and his intentions of getting a title shot.  For now, Gustafsson waits, but he doesn’t want to wait long.

I hope the UFC gives him a shot at the belt, but it would be cool to see him fight Machida too.

    • That’s why I love this guy. He’s a real fighter for sure asking to fight at top guy if he doesn’t receive a title shot. Other guys would have been complaining about not getting their shot yet. Him and Lyoto does make a very good # 1 contender fight but I would also like to see Phi; Davis fight Lyoto b/c he deserves a high ranked fight and is Gustafs only defeat. Who knows maybe they rematch for a title one day. I think those two are under rated and deserve more respect. And Glover Tex as well.

Davis got owned by Evans if you missed that fight

        • falloniousWolf

Yeah, and there is no reason to believe that Davis’s striking improved since that fight.

Rashad was the worst match up for a guy like Davis. Pretty much someone who can neutralize Davis’s takedowns and out strike him.

I see Machida beating Davis as well.

I see Phil beating Shogun via 3 round decision.

I don’t see Davis beating Rashad…not just yet.

If the winner of bones-Sonnen gets injured, machida and gustaf should fight for sure. Right now there are the following LHW contenders: Texiera, hendo/Evans, machida, gustaf and Mousasi. Am I missing anyone? And maybe lil nog and Phil davis. I guess the Evans hendo winner should fight either Texiera or gustaf, and maybe Mousasi could fight the other one.

      • falloniousWolf

Mousasi and Texiera are not contenders.

        Rashad is not also.

        You have

        Machida and Gustafsson as contenders.

        Evans, Hendo closely trailing them.

Then Texiera, Mousasi Lil Nog and Shogun. All three of them have a lot more to prove.

I wouldn’t consider Shogun a contender right now.

          • falloniousWolf

He is definitely in the top 10 or 15. But he is not a contender for sure. I would say him and Lil Nog are about the same.

            UFC LHW REAL ranking:
            1. Jon Bones Jones
            2. Lyoto Machida
            3. Dan Henderson
            4. Alexander Gustafsson
            5. Rashad Evans
            6. Phil Davis
            7. Lil Nog
            8. Shogun Rua
            9. Gloxer Texiera
            10. Mousasi

Shogun is below Lil Nog because Shogun has been on a losing streak whereas Lil Nog just beat Evans.

Mousasi should be happy that I even included him in the ranking. He hasn’t fought anyone noteworthy. He couldn’t KO Keith Jardine!!! And his toughest opponent to date was King Mo to whom he lost. His second toughest opponent to date was Babalu, who is not even top 20 at the moment.

I had high hopes for Evans but his fight against Lil’ Nog was pathetic. So weird after making Phil Davis look like an amature. I think Evans must have some personal issues in his head keeping him from being the fighter he could be. If he fought Jones like he fought Davis, he might be champ right now.

Machida is next contender and should an injury come to Chael, then Machida should be tabbed as next.

Gustaffson should fight Teixeira next if he wants to keep busy.

    • falloniousWolf

Gustaffson vs Teixeira would be good.

Pretty much Gustaffson vs any top LHW sounds good.

    • shakejunt

gotta preserve contenders man. not that tex can’t handle himself against gus, but the division needs new blood and the way to do that is pair them up with the old guard.

  • annoying.

  • Mousasi is out for a while, so Teixera or Machida sound good. Machida vs Teixera sounds good too.
