- TUF 10 COACH HECTOR RAMIREZ: WEEK 9 RECAP
Thursday, November 12, 2009 - by Hector Ramirez (Team Rampage) - Special to MMAWeekly.com

After watching this episode, the first question on everyone's mind should be, "What happened to the third round?"
Episode nine is just another example of why fighters can never leave it to the judges' scorecards. We've already seen this twice before earlier in the season, not to mention the thoroughly discussed main event at UFC 104, but still, when this happens, it is only natural that we as fighters and fans wonder why.
As a previous episode explained, Scott Junk and Justin Wren have been really good friends, even before entering the TUF house. If you were wondering why Junk was there warming up Wren and why he was in Wren's corner, it was because they are loyal friends. That is the kind of attitude we inspired within our own team and something which we continued to encourage; when Junk wanted to help corner Wren, even though Wren was not part of Team Rampage, all the coaches were respectful of his request. No doubt, that kind of support helped Wren feel confident going into that fight and helped him perform incredibly well, it's a shame that there is such a large disconnect between what fighters know of a fight and what judges know.
I agree with Dana that if this fight went to a third round, conditioning favored Roy and that Roy would have ultimately taken the decision. However, what frustrates every competitor is that the third round, when both fighters are tired, is a gut check. It gives the fighter the opportunity to ask himself if he really wants to fight and gives him the opportunity to answer back. If he doesn't want to fight, he can fold under the pressure, but if he does want to fight, he has the opportunity to give everything he's got and see what he can do. These gut checks are what separates the experienced from the inexperienced. Justin Wren deserved the opportunity to get more experienced in the cage and both pose the question and reply with action.
Fortunately though, this episode was about more than just the unexpected in the form of another questionable decision, it was also about the unexpected in the form of people's background. Mike Van Arsdale surprised me with his country background by running after the chicken and actually catching it. He hooked that chicken with some kind of farm maneuver that I'm not sure I can really explain; I just know that I'm a city man and I like my chicken prepackaged.
Never short on ideas, I can assure you that Rampage's mind is hard at work thinking of other fun pranks. I'm not sure what Spike will show, but we'll soon find out what else is up Rampage's sleeve.
To everyone who has supported me in the past and continues to support me: Thank you always! I'm very disappointed to inform you that Call To Arms has cancelled their show and I won't have the opportunity to fight for you this weekend. But the fat lady hasn't sung just yet and I look forward to announcing where I will be fighting soon. Keep checking back for all the best in MMA news!
