LONDON – Cold summer rain failed to deter fans of MMA from taking in the latest installment of Ultimate Challenge at the Troxy. With a card strangely devoid of heavyweights, the action was fast and furious – leaving the judge’s with little to do for the evening.

Headlining the event was an encounter between tough featherweights Dino Gambetesa and Brad Wheeler. The fight promised to be a barnstormer, but instead, Gambetesa landed a big right hand shortly after the bell and scrambled to mount, his piston-like right hand separating Wheeler from lucidity at the 40-second mark.

Underrated Team Tsunami fighter Jack Mason stuck to his patented game plan and submitted Dorlan O’Malley with a textbook arm triangle after landing the takedown. It was clear that O’Malley had been looking to use his heavy hands on the middleweight, but never got a sniff at the chance.

Dyson Roberts signaled his intent with an impressive takedown of opponent Michael Brown before setting about his ground and pound offense. Brown proved to be a very tough competitor though and managed to survive the onslaught; even threatening with a guillotine at one point. Pushing through exhaustion, Roberts worked diligently to gain side control before securing mount. Hammering away with every last drop of his gas tank, he forced a referee stoppage at the 2:07 mark.

Jamaine Facey made short work of a very game Nigel Whitear by way of ground and pound, facilitated by a solid knee to the ribs on his opponent, forcing him to the mat in agony and trying to cover up.

Back to the featherweights who continued to impress as London Shootfighter Giorgio Andrews flew across the cage to setup a takedown on opponent Max Henchey before landing in guard. Content with the position, Andrews stacked his opponent into the cage before firing away with precise blows to the head. Scrambling fast to get out of harm’s way, Henchey ended up giving his back allowing Andrews to sink in the rear naked choke.

Luke Smith had a very messy encounter with the tough John Joe Ellis before picking up the triangle submission victory in the second round. Disappointingly, he was warned for headbutting and an illegal kick to the face on the ground, which deters from his gutsy performance. Still, Ellis was game and kept pressuring his opponent with his heavy hands. Despite the submission victory, Ellis came out of the fight with one of the worst hematomas seen in the U.K., very reminiscent of Renato "Babalu" Sobral and his IFC tournament win several years ago in Denver.

Brett Bassett continued to look good in his encounter with Adam Avo, submitting the fighter with a rear naked choke after being planted on his back early in the round. Calm and composed, it didn’t take long before he was out and scrambling for the submission.
