UFC 85 PRELIMINARY CARD RECAP AND PHOTOS

Martin Kampmann def. Jorge Rivera by Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 2:34, R1

Martin Kampmann returned from a lengthy layoff due to injury looking like he hadn’t missed a day. He had to battle midway into the second round with Jorge Rivera at UFC 85, submitting his fellow UFC veteran with a guillotine choke despite being more widely known for his striking abilities.

Matt Wiman def. Thiago Tavares by KO at 1:57, R2

Matt Wiman and Thiago Tavares deftly exchanged submission attempts and striking exchanges that saw each fighter, on multiple occasions, appear as if he were out of the fight. But as round two neared the midway point, it was Wiman that put Tavares down for the count, scoring the win. This was a spectacular bout that earned "Fight of the Night" honors with both Wiman and Tavares going home with a $50,000 bonus check.

Kevin Burns def. Roan Carneiro by Submission (Triangle Choke) at 3:56, R2

Despite holding the rank of a mere blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Octagon newcomer Kevin Burns submitted black belt world champion Roan Carneiro with a triangle choke, late in the second round of their preliminary bout. The choke was enough to earn Burns “Submission of the Night” honors and a $50,000 bonus check.

Luis Cane def. Jason Lambert by TKO (Strikes) at 2:07, R1

Luis Cane was disqualified in his first go around in the Octagon, but at UFC 85, he wasted no time and had no issues as he overwhelmed veteran Jason Lambert for a TKO stoppage just two minutes into the opening round.

Paul Taylor def. Jess Liaudin by Split Decision, R3

Their rematch was five years in the making, but in the end, Paul Taylor and Jess Liaudin emerged with the same result at UFC 85 as they had at Cage Rage 2. After three rounds of going at it, Taylor once again had his hand raised, earning a split decision victory.

Antoni Hardonk def. Eddie Sanchez by TKO (Strikes) at 4:15, R2

After dropping back-to-back bouts in 2007, Antoni Hardonk has started off 2008 in the right direction. The Dutch striker scored a second round TKO over Eddie Sanchez at UFC 85, giving him two wins in two attempts this year.
