California State Athletic Commission representative Bill Douglas announced on Thursday that Bill Mahood has decided to appeal his fine and suspension for a positive test result for the anabolic agent Drostanolone. He will be placed on the Dec. 4 agenda along with Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder Sean Sherk, Kazuhiro Nakamura, and Adam Smith.

Mahood, on Oct. 15, was fined $2,500 and suspended for 365 days. According to the CSAC, he tested positive following his Sept. 29 bout with Bobby Southworth at Strikeforce at the Mansion. He lost the fight after verbally submitting little more than a minute into the first round.

The appeal comes somewhat as a surprise due to the fact that he openly admitted using an anabolic agent in comments following his suspension.

In a statement released on Oct. 16, Mahood stated, “I did in fact start the use of an anabolic agent approximately the third week in August. This was at a time that I thought I was done fighting and was suffering from a chronic joint inflammation of my hip.”

He went on to say that he “did not want to miss the opportunity of fighting for a great promoter like Strikeforce” and immediately discontinued any use of the anabolic agent, believing that it would be out of his system prior to fight day. I do believe that there was no benefit from the amount ingested.”

In a follow-up interview with Bodog Nation, Mahood explained, “I only managed to take two doses. The thing hadn't even started helping my hip, and then I got a phone call … I stopped taking it immediately. Then I started researching how long it stays in your system. It was supposed to have a half-life of nine days or something, so I thought, ‘Great. All right, I've got almost four weeks.’ The last thing I wanted to do was go into a situation where I was going to test for anything … I looked into it. I was confident that if it weren’t already out of my system, it would be completely gone.”

He continued, “Everyone who's been involved in this sport or done any high-level sport knows about the aches and pains. Everyone out there has, I'm sure, at some point ingested a steroid. When my retina was detached, I was given a steroidal eye drop. Guys are given steroidal creams for eczema. My ex-wife was given a steroid for a stomach condition. There are hundreds and hundreds of different drugs out there. Some of them are performance enhancing and some are simply therapeutic. Unfortunately, the media gets a hold of something, and they're just looking to grab a headline.

"The bottom line,” said Mahood, “is I took a banned substance. I took it; I think, for good, honorable reasons as opposed to trying to get an advantage. Unfortunately, there was a barely discernable amount left in me. I apologize to everyone involved – Bodog Fight, Strikeforce and the sport in general – but I hope that people would take a second to look beyond the headline and see the underlying circumstance."
