- MORTON AND GRACIE CONCLUDE CSAC DISCIPLINE
Thursday, August 02, 2007 - by Ken Pishna - MMAWeekly.com

California State Athletic Commission representative Bill Douglas today informed MMAWeekly that several disciplinary matters for MMA fighters have been completed. The matters that have been officially resolved by the CSAC include Royce Gracie, Tim Persey and Johnnie Morton, all fighters that competed on the June 2nd K-1/Pro Elite co-promoted event at the L.A. Coliseum.
As per his public statement, Royce Gracie did not submit an appeal regarding his suspension and fine for testing positive for the anabolic steroid Nandrolone Metabolite. Gracie tested positive following his bout with Kazushi Sakuraba at the Dynamite!! USA event. He was subsequently fined the California maximum of $2,500 and suspended for 12 months from the date of the fight.
Tim Persey, who competed on the Pro Elite promoted portion of the event, also did not appeal his suspension after testing positive for methamphetamine. Persey was fined $1,000 (five percent of his $20,000 fight purse) and suspended for six months.
Former NFL football player turned mixed martial artist, Johnnie Morton tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone. He was making his fighting debut on the K-1 promoted portion of the event.
Morton’s official infractions were threefold: he failed to submit to a test for drugs of abuse, he tested positive for an elevated T/E ratio which indicates elevated levels of testosterone, and he failed to comply with a request from the CSAC to explain his actions on the evening of June 2. As a result, Morton has been fined a total of $7,500 and his license as a professional athlete has been revoked. He is eligible to reapply one year from the date of revocation, which in his case was June 26, 2007, but must appear before the Commission for approval.
Douglas stated that, “Mr. Morton paid his fines in full and did not appeal the revocation of his license.”
Morton’s Chief Second, Joseph Sakoda, has also been fined a total of $5,000 for advising Morton to refuse taking the test for drugs of abuse and for failing to comply with a request from the Commission to explain his actions.
According to Douglas, “The fines are unpaid at this time and [Sakoda’s] license as a second has been revoked.” He is eligible to reapply one year from the date of revocation, which is July 11, 2007, but Sakoda, like Morton, must appear in front of the Commission for approval of licensure and must pay the fine in full.
