- BELLATOR COULD TAKE HUERTA TO MEXICO
Monday, March 15, 2010 - by Ken Pishna - MMAWeekly.com

Roger Huerta, as evidenced by being the first mixed martial artist to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine, was a popular fighter during his tenure in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He was also a fighter proud to brandish his Mexican heritage.
Bellator Fighting Championships on Monday announced that it had signed “El Matador” to compete in the second rendition of its lightweight tournament, the winner getting a shot at current champion Eddie Alvarez in September.
He has to make his way past three other fighters to get there, but most of the media on Monday was already scripting him into the part. If it does come to pass, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney confirmed that the promotion is considering taking the fight to Mexico.
“It’s absolutely possible,” he responded to questions of Huerta helping take the upstart promotion south of the American border.
“Conceivably, there could be a Roger superfight in Mexico, which is something that we’re already looking into and potentially doing it.”
Although Bellator has only one season of its tournament format in the books, Rebney is quick to dust his hopes of putting on fights in Mexico with a sprinkling of practicality.
“Right now, the focus has to be April, May, June. It’s got to be the focus for him and it’s the focus for us as a company,” he declared.
“The traction, as is the case with everything we do, has gotta start right there. It’s gotta start with the first round, the second round, and the third round of that tournament.”
