DENVER – At the foot of the Rocky Mountains, Denver played host to the thirty-eighth edition of the Kick Down on Friday night. Not one of the thirteen bouts went the distance, but the main event, in somewhat of an anti-climax was the quickest. Damond Clark came out and quickly started landing punches to the head of Brian Cristina who went down 11 seconds into the bout. Cristina seemed to immediately be clear headed, but referee Don Thais had called a halt to the bout, crowning Clark the new Kick Down Heavyweight Professional Champion.

Cruz Chacon, 37 years old, has been around the mixed martial arts game before it was even sanctioned in the State of Colorado. It showed tonight. Although his opponent, Chris Woods had a combined professional and amateur record of 5-1 and fights out of a Miletich affiliate school in South Dakota, this one was all Chacon. “The Saint” weathered an early storm by Woods, working him over for most of their two-round bout before scrambling to full mount and unloading a flurry of strikes that had referee Tim Mills stopping the fight.

Moving from an armbar to a triangle choke and then back to an armbar, Tom Johnson, often a referee on prior Kick Down events, secured the win over John Sargent with the latter armbar at the 51 second mark of round one.

Not to be outdone by Johnson, Kick Down mainstay and local fan favorite Joey Welch wasted no time in applying an armbar on Jason Dake and locking it out just 26 seconds into the first round.

Isaac Colon was impressive in defending his amateur Jr. Featherweight belt after back and forth action with Dominic Blanco for two rounds. Starting off the third and final round, Colon ate a punch from Blanco, but immediately caught him in a fight-ending guillotine choke that he held onto extra long for good measure.

As always, it seems, the ladies did not fail to put on an exciting fight. Clara Burtiss, out of Kongo-Do Dojo in Colorado Springs, brought the fight to Louise Johnson early on with sheer strength and some heavy ground and pound. Johnson turned the tables midway through the round, nearly securing the win with a triangle choke. Burtiss escaped the choke, but Johnson took mount and pounded out a TKO victory.
